A Ram Built in a Cornfield
The young Confederate Gillbert Elliott had a talent for ironclad rams. On the April 19,
1864 the small ram of 152 feet was ready to move down Roanoke river. Surprising USS
Miami and the ferryboat USS Southfield, captain Flusser was killed, and the Southfield
was but to the bottom. Gunboats Sassacus, Wyalusing, and Mattabesett joined the action
and fired 450 heavy shots, however not much hurting the ram. Unable to defeat the
Albemarle, the ram took cover in Plymouth, hiding the Union forces to avoid attack.

ASSEMBLING THE MODEL

Start the assembly with the hull by scoring part 1-3
and join the glue together. Proceed to the formers 4-
13 and then add 14, the maindeck. After scoring and
folding 15 and 16 form hullsides. Part 17 makes the
stern piece. Next step is to build the inside of the
casemat: two pivot Brook rifles (18), windlass (19),
and lower funnel (20). 21 and 22 are optional figures
of the crew.
23a is the casemate where to cut out the following
openings: the conning tower (24), funnel (25), and
the companion way (26-28). 23b is fixed inside of the
casemate. 23c adds support to the casemate, while
23d is an optional part to add cover around gun
ports, part 34. This might overdo it! Leave it out.
Anchor chain, anchor and anchor davits (29 and 32)
are to be added in the bow. Bollards are glued in
place (30) on the foredeck and the aft. The cleats on top
of the casemate can be added (34). In the stern the
ram sometimes had a ship´s boat (35) that rested on a
platform (36). To lift it into the water it had davits on
each side (31). Two flagpoles (37) were used with
the flags fore and on top of the casemate, the latter having
the small red state flag in the large white field, a late
emblem.
Next part is building the diorama, assembling the three
parts on the last page (40,41,42).The name plate "CCS
ALBEMARLE" (43) is to glue with the strips (44).
Don´t forget to cut out and bend the pieces.
