Supply gas enters the inlet filters (one for oxygen and one for air)
at a pressure of 30 to 90 pounds per square inch gauge (psig).
Each inlet filter traps particles as small as 40 microns and includes
a water trap 10 collect any water in the supply gas.
The regulated gas enlers the servo valves, which control the flow
of gas to the palien!. A Servo Valve Calibration creates a lookup
table of the currents required to generate a range of flows from the
servo valve. The lookup table allows the ventilator lo largel the set
flow as quickly as possible, and feedback from flow sensors every
10 milliseconds allows the ventilator to refine flow delivery.
Because the lookup table is unique 10 each combination of
regulator and servo valve, the Servo Valve Calibration must be
rerun when either component is replaced. Most 01 the gas
pressure drops across Ihe servo valves, and gas exiting the servo
valves is elose 10 patient pressure.
Downstream of the air and oxygen servo valves are flow sensors.
The microprocessor provides a closed loop control system
between the sensors and the valves to regulate the flow output of
the valves. Each flow sensor is a hot wire anemometer: as gas
flows through the sensor, it cools the wire. The flow sensor adjusts
power lo keep wire temperature constant, and the power required
relates to the Ilow across the wire. Each f10w sensor is lactory-
calibraled for air or oxygen.
Air and oxygen then enter Ihe mixing chamber, where they are
combined using a static blender and a screen mesh. The
blended gas exits to the patienl circuit through the inspiratory
manifold. The inspiratory manifold also includes the emergency
intake/reliel valve.

Direct current Irom the power supply enters the OC-OC power
supply PCS, which supplies operating voltage to other PCSs,
including charging lor the internal battery. The OC-OC power
supply PCS also powers the lan, hour meter, and heater.
The Main PCS accepts inpul Irom oxygen sensor, air and oxygen
servo valves, and acts as motherboard lor the venlilator. The Main
PCS powers and receives signals from the Analog PCS.
The Sack Panel PCS includes circuilry lor the alarm volume '-_
control as well as the lollowing connections: serial port, Control
Panel cable, Graphics Display Module cable, Remote Alarm cable,
External Alarm Silence cable, and External Sattery cable.
The Analog PCS receives signals Irom Ihe Ilow sensors and
contains all venlilalor pressure Iransducers.
The Solenoid PCS contains all valve conlrols (solenoids) excepl lor
the air, oxygen, and exhalation servo valves.
SAFETV MECHANISMS
The e500 ventilalor provides Ihe means to relieve excess pressure
or allow patient access lo ambienl air, il necessary. In Ihe case 01 a
device alert, excess pressure, or power down wilh gas supplies
connecled, Ihe software opens Ihe exhalation valve and
emergency inlake/relief valve, and a power-down solenoid delivers
8.0 ± 2.0 Umin 01 air (or oxygen il air isn't available) through Ihe
proximal pressure tubing.
