The e500 Gas Delivery Unit (GDU) ineludes these subsystems:

• Exhalation system

• Electronics

• Safety mechanisms

INHALATION SYSTEM

The inhalation system, shown in Figure A-1, supplies gas

according to the user-selected breath delivery settings.

Mlxed gas sample to

oxygen sensor

Figure A-1. Inhalation System

Supply gas enters the inlet filters (one for oxygen and one for air)
at a pressure of 30 to 90 pounds per square inch gauge (psig).
Each inlet filter traps particles as small as 40 microns and includes
a water trap 10 collect any water in the supply gas.

The filtered supply gas lhen enters a regulator that regulates

pressure from 30 to 90 psig down to 15 psig. Transducers monitor
pressure at Ihe regulators, and generate a low inlel pressure alarm
in case of an excessive pressure drop at either regulator.

The regulated gas enlers the servo valves, which control the flow
of gas to the palien!. A Servo Valve Calibration creates a lookup
table of the currents required to generate a range of flows from the
servo valve. The lookup table allows the ventilator lo largel the set
flow as quickly as possible, and feedback from flow sensors every
10 milliseconds allows the ventilator to refine flow delivery.
Because the lookup table is unique 10 each combination of
regulator and servo valve, the Servo Valve Calibration must be
rerun when either component is replaced. Most 01 the gas
pressure drops across Ihe servo valves, and gas exiting the servo
valves is elose 10 patient pressure.

SER500WW A0504 A-1

THEORY OF OPERATION

Downstream of the air and oxygen servo valves are flow sensors.
The microprocessor provides a closed loop control system
between the sensors and the valves to regulate the flow output of
the valves. Each flow sensor is a hot wire anemometer: as gas
flows through the sensor, it cools the wire. The flow sensor adjusts
power lo keep wire temperature constant, and the power required
relates to the Ilow across the wire. Each f10w sensor is lactory-
calibraled for air or oxygen.

Air and oxygen then enter Ihe mixing chamber, where they are
combined using a static blender and a screen mesh. The
blended gas exits to the patienl circuit through the inspiratory
manifold. The inspiratory manifold also includes the emergency
intake/reliel valve.

A small tube Irom the inspiratory manilold uses a venturi flow to

sample a small amount 01 mixed gas lor the oxygen sensor, where
it is monitored and compared to the set F¡02. Because the oxygen
sensor is sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure and
temperature, the ventilator calibrates the oxygen sensor at power
up and periodically during normal operation. During calibration, the
oxygen calibration solenoid is energized and sends 100% oxygen
(from the oxygen inlet) lo the oxygen sensor for about three
minutes. Ventilator software assigns an FI02 01 1.0 to the voltage
read during calibralion. II selected in the monitor window, the FI02
display shows "---" until the calibration is compiete.

During exhalation, the inhalation system supplies a bias flow of 3.0

Umin through the patient circuit to Ilush exhaled C02 and stabilize
temperature, humidity, and baseline pressure. If bias flow exiting
the exhalation system drops, the inhalation system increases f10w
output to compensate for a possible leak. Maximum leak
compensation is determined by the patient type (Ped/lnfant = 8.0
Umin, Adult = 15.0 Umin).

The ventilator uses proximal pressure tubing to sense pressure at

the patient wye. A low flow 01 approximately 0.05 Umin of air
through the proximal pressure tubing keeps moisture from
collecting in the proximalline during normal ventilation. When the
ventilator is powered down but still connected to gas (for example,
when the power switch is toggled to Standby position or during a
Device Alert), the proximal pressure tubing supplies 8.0 ± 2.0
Umin of air to the patient if possible.

A transducer monitors the pressure of the internal ventilator

compartment, aeting as a backup to the proximal pressure
transducers. A proximal transducer rezero solenoid maintains an
accurate zero point far the proximal pressure transducers by
opening periodically to note the voltage that equals atmospheric
(zero) pressure.

A-2 SER500WW A0504

APPENDIX A

EXHALATION SYSTEM

The exhalation system, shown in Figure A-2, measures the

Ilows and volumes 01 gas exhaled Irom the patient circuit
and controls the exhalation valve to allow exhalation and
maintain PEEP in the patient circuit.

-....

-
.....
Figure A-2. Exhalatlon System

Because gas exhaled Irom the patient is humidilied to

100% relative humidity, the expiratory block ineludes a
water trap to collect condensate that lorms as the exhaled
gas cools. The water trap plunger eloses the water trap
port when the bowl is removed ler emptying, eliminating
the hazards 01 spraying or circuit pressure loss.

The heater then heats gas Irom the expiratory block to

prevent lurther condensation in the exhalation f10w sensor.
The exhalation f10w sensor includes a screen that creates a
known pressure drop (determined by the diameter 01 the
screen wires) at various f10w rates. By measuring the
pressure belore and alter the screen, the ventilator
determines the f10w 01 the exhaled gas. The exhalation f10w
sensor is lactory-tested, and does not require lurther
calibration. A re-zero solenoid maintains an accurate zera
point lor the exhalation f10w sensor transducer by opening
at power up and periodically during normal operation to
note the voltage that equals atmospheric (zero) pressure.

Gas Irom the exhalation f10w sensor f10ws to the exhalation

valve. The exhalation valve ineludes a flexible silicone
exhalation diaphragm. Orive pressure Irom the jet pump
opens and closes the diaphragm to allow inspiration,
exhalation, and maintain PEEP.

The Exhalation Solenoid valve is a small servo valve that

varies its current to control the outlet f10w to the exhalation
valve diaphragm. Gas Irom the Exhalation Solenoid valve
enters the jet pump, where it f10ws through a jet nozzle to
create drive pressure to the exhalation valve diaphragm.

SER500WW A0504 A-3

THEORV OF OPERATION

A pressure transducer thal monitors exhalation drive line pressure

tells the Exhalation Solenoid to increase or decrease its output to
achieve the correct drive pressure so thal measured PEEP equals
sel PEEP. In case 01 a circuit disconnect or large brealhing circuil
leak, these relerence pressures help avoid supplying excess
pressure in an eflort to compensale lor a disconnect. Excess Ilow
Irom the jet pump venls Ihrough the mufller.

ELECTRONICS

Power to the venlilator enlers the AC inlet, which connects to the

power supply. The power supply converts alternating current to
direct current, and accepts any specilied voltage or frequency
withoul adjustment.

Direct current Irom the power supply enters the OC-OC power
supply PCS, which supplies operating voltage to other PCSs,
including charging lor the internal battery. The OC-OC power
supply PCS also powers the lan, hour meter, and heater.

The Main PCS accepts inpul Irom oxygen sensor, air and oxygen
servo valves, and acts as motherboard lor the venlilator. The Main
PCS powers and receives signals from the Analog PCS.

The Sack Panel PCS includes circuilry lor the alarm volume '-_
control as well as the lollowing connections: serial port, Control
Panel cable, Graphics Display Module cable, Remote Alarm cable,
External Alarm Silence cable, and External Sattery cable.

The Analog PCS receives signals Irom Ihe Ilow sensors and
contains all venlilalor pressure Iransducers.

The Solenoid PCS contains all valve conlrols (solenoids) excepl lor
the air, oxygen, and exhalation servo valves.

SAFETV MECHANISMS
The e500 ventilalor provides Ihe means to relieve excess pressure
or allow patient access lo ambienl air, il necessary. In Ihe case 01 a
device alert, excess pressure, or power down wilh gas supplies
connecled, Ihe software opens Ihe exhalation valve and
emergency inlake/relief valve, and a power-down solenoid delivers
8.0 ± 2.0 Umin 01 air (or oxygen il air isn't available) through Ihe
proximal pressure tubing.

Venlilator hardware salety mechanisms acl as backups to the

software safety mechanisms. If software cannot manage an
excess pressure condition, the exhalalion valve relieves pressure
at about 135 CmH20 (132 mbar) and Ihe emergency intake/reliel
valve vents al aboul 140 cmH20 (137 mbar).
