STUDIES BOARD MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 17th OCTOBER 2016

2.1 OPENING PRAYER


The meeting commenced at about 10.07 A.M. with the opening prayer said by
Dr. Musa Tanko Zarmai.

3.0 CHAIRPERSON’S OPENING REMARKS

The Chairperson informed the board that a preliminary shortlist of prospective


postgraduate students for the 2016/2017 academic session has been prepared
based on the transcript forwarded to the Department. This will be the first set of
postgraduate students in the Department and thus they will be the pioneers.

3.1 CONSIDERATION OF 2016/2017 POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION


Dr. I. D. Muhammad, the Departmental Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies,
presented the names of shortlisted candidates for Master’s degree programme
as well as for PhD degree programme to board members for their perusal,
comments and input.

Engr. Prof. O. B. Oloche suggested that candidates under Production option


and those of Materials option should be merged into a single option.
Furthermore, he pointed out that there were no details for candidate No. 4 on
the shortlist.

The Board resolved that candidates without credit in either Physics or English
should be contacted through text message to ascertain if they have written other
exams to make up those subjects.

In addition, the Board resolved to shelve the Postgraduate Diploma programme


due to insufficient number of candidates. A minimum of 10 candidates is
required in order to make the programme viable.
With regards to PhD supervision, the Board was informed that according to the
University Postgraduate regulations, only those lecturers with a minimum of
3years post-PhD experience are qualified to supervise PhD candidates as Main
Supervisors. On the other hand, lecturers with less than 3years post-PhD
experience can only be Minor Supervisors. Also, qualified lecturers on Pro-
bono as well as those on sabbatical can supervise PhD candidates.

3.2 AOB

The Board was informed that Dr. Nasir M. Lawal has lost his father. Members
expressed their heart-felt sympathy over the loss.

3.3 ADJOURNMENT

Engr. Prof. O. B. Oloche moved for adjournment of the meeting and was
seconded by Dr. F. H. Tobins.

3.4 CLOSING PRAYER

Dr. I. D. Muhammad said the closing prayer. The meeting ended at about
10.44A.M.
