TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
RESEARCH
Research Information

 The name and contact information of the person the team member spoke with. Roya 424-372-1065

 The name of the house and location. 720 Oxford Street - Houston, Texas (Located in The Heights)

 Types of programs the organization offers. The programs are tailored to each individual person. To name a few, a local gym membership is
included, daily chef prepared meals, full transportation to and from and appointments, work, school, IOP or meetings. Twice weekly drug
testing with lab conformations. Mind/body healing classes such as mindfulness meditation, acupuncture and/or yoga. 24/7 awake staff with a
client ratio of 3:1. Weekly goal setting and accountability as well as communication with client’s family and treatment teams.

 The goals and ambitions of the organization. The Oxford House specializes in a trauma centered approach and they address each situation on
an individual basis. The goal is to give these ladies a safe environment to develop skills that will get them back on track. Ultimately these ladies
are given a support system and all the help they need to turn their lives around in a positive direction. The goal is to heal the mind, body, and
soul.

 Typical gathering spaces and what they are used for. These ladies are in given luxurious accommodations in this house. They have everything a
typical house would have such as bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, family room, dining room, laundry room, gathering spaces inside and outside.

 Typical needs for women/children staying at the house. The typical needs for these women are usually in some way related to substance abuse.
This particular house is designed for women only but some houses are designed for women and children as a safe place.

 Typical accommodations provided in private units. Bed, closet, dresser and access to nearby bathroom. The house itself is fully equipped with
everything that you would need in a house.

 Any additional information that would be helpful in the design for this project. These women at the Oxford House are there to learn to
overcome and restructure their lives. They are given the tools and the emotional support needed to rise above their circumstances.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

As I sat down to read through my assignment, I didn’t even know what the term “Transitional Housing” meant. I have learned
so much today!! As I started reading and researching I began to understand the purpose of this assignment a little better. I
started be clicking on the link in our classroom and going to the website that connects you to your local area. There are all
different types of housing like this set up for different purposes. Some are for men that are veterans or working men that
have an addiction. Some are for women like the one I found that are mostly dealing with some sort of substance abuse issue
or mental issues. Some are “safe houses” for women and children getting away form domestic violence. This really opened
my eyes to a world I really knew very little about. The Oxford House I found, had by far the most information and a photo
gallery. Without actually going to the residence, I was able to get all my information off their website and from talking to
Roya. When I called to speak with someone, she is the lady that answered the phone. I explained that I am a design student
at the Art Institute and the assignment I am working on requires me to do research. She was happy to help me and answer
all the questions I had. Roya said at this home there are anywhere from 12-16 ladies. Depending on the circumstances, these
ladies will live there anywhere from 2 to 12 months. The ladies become like family through the process. I asked Roya if they
had individual rooms and she said they do have a couple of rooms that are single but most rooms are double occupancy.
These ladies go on outings together to the beach, zoo, museums, coffee shops, gym etc… Each lady has a customized plan
and goals to help them get back to a good place and live a healthy lifestyle. This organization, Transcend Texas, has programs
for both men and women. The ultimate goal is to provide these individuals with a safe place to get things straightened out in
their lives and to get back to their “new normal” lifestyle that is safe and healthy. The Oxford House has awake staff 24/7 and
the ration is three client’s to one staff member. Medication is even monitored at all times. This program has gone to the
extreme in making sure every detail is accounted for. Healthy meals are prepared by a chef daily and a fully stocked pantry
is available to the clients. The ladies also prepare some meals together and eat as a “family”. Twice a week the clients are
drug tested and have lab conformations. I’m sure there are requirements in behavior effecting the length of stay or
contract. However the job of a designer in this situation is to learn enough about how a facility like this operates so that
we are designers can do our job and create safe and enjoyable environments for people going through a rough time in life.
These facilities are basically set up as any other home would be. There needs to be several bedrooms in which to
accommodate clients. In the case of women with children, these bedrooms would need to be large enough to have several
beds. In the case of only men or only women houses, these rooms can be double occupancy as they would have a
roommate. The other parts of the home would function like, any other home, in the fact that they would need a laundry
room, kitchen, bathrooms, living room, dining room etc…. Gathering spaces are important as well. Cozy places inside as
well as outside are important so give places for people to hang out and mingle. These people need each other the lean on
and support one another. As a designer, I want to create an environment that is comfortable and relaxing so that the
treatment teams and staff can give these individuals the support they need to get back to living life in a safe and healthy
way. I’m looking forward to taking my new found knowledge, and applying it, to create a “safe place” for women and
children to live in this transitional time in their lives.
CONCEPT STATEMENT

This Federal Style home is located in Boston, MA. The purpose of this Transitional home is
to house women and children in a safe environment. This home is designed to get these
women the help they need by teaching them life skills. As you enter this home you will find
an open floorplan that is welcoming to all guests. The blues, greens, creams and browns are
a calming and relaxing color palette. This home is decorated with federal style furniture
and furnishings. Located inside the home is a childcare area that is a perfect place for the
children to play. This house has everything that these young ladies need. Downstairs you
will find the gathering areas, kitchen, dining room, restroom, director’s office, laundry room
and childcare area. Upstairs is where the bedroom units are located as well as the
bathrooms. This Federal style home will welcome ladies and children in need, for years to
come.
CREATING COLOR PALETTES
COLOR PALETTE #1

This Federal style home, has rich hews of deep

reds, blues, greys and creamy white with
touches of gold. The rich dark wood is a nice
contrast to the lighter greys and whites. This
palette is very striking and formal.
COLOR PALETTE #2

This formal Federal style dining room has a

popping turquoise color on the walls and
creamy white trim on the moldings. The rich
hardwood color and the dark furniture pieces
anchor the room. Gold frames add to the
formality of the space and give a nice contrast
between the wall color and the frames.
COLOR PALETTE #3

This muted color palette of peach, gold,

creamy white and blue give this formal sitting
room a calming and relaxing feel. The lighter
colors give this room more of a famine feel.
FINAL COLOR PALETTE #1
FINAL COLOR PALETTE
CHOSEN

This Federal style living room is a calming

place to sit and relax. This color palette is
typical in federal style homes. The soft blues,
greens, creams and browns are a welcoming
choice for a Transitional home because of the
calming effect these colors have. Without too
many breakable furnishings, this would be a
great choice for the family room in this
Transitional home.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE SOLUTION
This Historical Federal style building located in Boston, MA has been renovated to become a transitional home for
women and children. These accommodations will be a safe place where these women and children can regain their
independence. From the moment one walks through these front doors, a since of style and comfort exudes all
around. The walls are kept light and creamy while the rich tones of the hardwoods balance out the space. As one
enters this home they will find an interesting rectangular shaped chevron pattern of hardwood to make a statement
and above the tray ceiling is backlit to welcome guests. The gathering space offers a bigger tray ceiling centered over
to conversation area. Not only is this tray ceiling backlit but hanging in the center is a beautiful iron and wood
chandelier that makes a big statement. This room not only reflects the traditional federal style but offers a bit of a
twist with it’s custom designed built-in with a fireplace and flat screen television above, and flanked with display
shelves. Tucked away in the corner is a small kitchenette for coffee and treats with comfortable seating for
conversation. From the gorgeous federal style, casual light fixtures, to the richly upholstered plush furniture pieces,
this home reflects the federal style, inside and out. No detail was left out in designing this transitional home. The
wide open gathering spaces flow down a long hallway that lead to apartments. Inside each apartment is a suitable
living space that reflects the gathering spaces/common areas, with an intimate retreat. Here these women and
children can be in a safe and beautiful environment, that will support each of their needs for the weeks or months
they need this help. There are so many dimensions to this home from the rich colors of teals, greens, chocolate
browns, and golds, balanced by the creamy wall color. The textures of this space vary from the soft velvet feel of the
upholstery to the smooth dark lighting fixtures and the medium toned furniture pieces. From floor to ceiling, this
home accomplishes the needs of these women and children while giving them a beautiful space as they transition
into a new phase of their lives.
REFLECTION

With each course I have taken in my Interior Design program, I am continually excited about each new
thing I have learned. This class has incorporated many aspects of design. From the history of
architecture, to the concept of time management, to cost estimating. This class seems to be wrapping up
every aspect of what an interior designer will be responsible for.

Throughout the time I have been taking design classes, I have had to develop time management skills and
prioritize my days. It’s defiantly a struggle with being a wife, mom and student. As I sit here three days
before Christmas on the computer, my mind is racing with all that I need to get done before we host
Christmas for my husband’s side of the family. My school work is extremely important to me and my
goal of having all A’s, drives myself each day to put my best foot forward. Something that I haven’t had in
other classes is cost estimating. Working with spreadsheets are something new to me and something I
need to continue to develop. My husband is a great teacher when it comes to developing spreadsheets
to work for you. Having a good spreadsheet in place will keep everything neatly organized so it’s easy to
see what things might need to be cut based of budget constraints. I’m continually impressed with the
way these classes are set up to help us develop the skills we need to be successful as an interior
designer. I’m looking forward to my next two classes that start January 1st.
