in the 1920s? into the 1920s – there was a
degradation of freedom, there
were lynchings in Alabama,
Arkansas and Florida, a beating by
Columbia University students by a
student who wrote a letter upon
free of speech and the press.
2. In 1922, the film industry adopted
the Hays Code.
1. A "Clear and Present
Danger"
1. The ACLU (American
Civil Liberties Union)
was established in 1920.
2. In its initial decisions,
the Supreme Court gave
the concept of civil
liberties a series of
devastating blows.
2. The Court and Civil Liberties
1. Oliver Wendell
Holmes and Louis
Brandeis began to speak
up for freedom of speech.
2. The new regard for
free speech went beyond
political expression.

The beginning of the 20s after WW I were normal, but labor started declining. As businesses promoted themselves,
the government became more and more corrupt. At the end of the 1920s, the stock market crashed, and the economy
stayed in one of the worst depressions for many years. A few new presidents were elected as citizens hoped the
economy would improve, but it didn’t.
