0 21.03.2016 Offer for 65 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (SBR Technology) SP
A. DESIGN BASIS
The proposed plant is designed by assuming following design data:

Parameter Inflow Conditions Outflow Conditions

Capacity (cum/day) 65
BOD 250-300 <30
COD 50-700 <100
TSS 300-500 <50
Oil & Grease <30 <10

All parameters are expressed in PPM.

B. PROCESS DESCRIPTION
The proposed treatment scheme is split into three distinct parts:

1. Pre-treatment, this comprises of screening through Bar Screen and collection in

equalization tank. (Clients Scope)
2. Biological aerobic treatment by SBR Process Technology.
3. Tertiary treatment comprising of sodium hypochlorite addition, dual media pressure
filtration and activated carbon filtration.

Silent features of the proposed plant based on SBR technology-

It does not require separate secondary clarifiers and major return sludge pumping
stations.
The system generates stabilized sludge and hence does not require any further treatment.
Being modular plant has got improved aesthetics and can be shifted any time as per
requirement.
Manpower requirement is minimal as the operations are automatic. Also the process
does not get affected easily due to automatic operations.
The plant does not have any noisy equipment thus reduces the nuisance.
The process does not generate odour or corrosive gases
Detailed description of each treatment step is given for SBR process is as below:

a. PRE-TREATMENT (in Client Scope)

The raw sewage would be passed through Bar Screen (Clients Scope) to remove all heavy
particles like plastics, cotton waste etc. and will be then collected in Equalization Tank (Client
scope) for balancing of flow and making the homogenous mass of the same.

b. SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR:

The sewage will be pumped by Raw Sewage Pump from Equalization tank to biological treatment
tank (SBR) for treatment and degradation of impurities from it. The Sequencing Batch Reactor
(SBR) is a Fill Treat and draw type activated sludge treatment system. It includes a generic system
of variable volume activated sludge in which aeration, Sedimentation and decantation are
combined in a single reactor. Consequently, there is no dedicated secondary clarifier or
associated return sludge facilities. The operation of the SBR consists of five distinct periods, which
comprise one complete reactor cycle. Each tank in the SBR system is filled during a discrete period
of time. During this FILL period, organism selection can be controlled by manipulating the actual
specific growth rates of the microbes and by regulating the oxygen tension in the reactor. Thus,
a FILL period may be static, mixed or aerated. After a tank is filled, treatment continues with the
SBR operating as a batch reactor.
During this REACT period, further selective pressures are applied by controlling the length of time
the organisms are subjected to starvation conditions. After treatment, the microbes are allowed
to separate by sedimentation during a period called SETTLE. The treated sewage is subsequently
drawn from the reactor during an additional distinct DRAW period. IDLE, the period between
DRAW and the beginning of the next cycle, provides excess capacity for times when the actual
flow exceeds the average or design flow. Periodic sludge wasting can be implemented, as needed,
during REACT, SETTLE, DRAW and IDLE.
Aerated and biologically treated supernatant from the SBR will be pumped by Decanter Pumps
to the Filter Feed Tank for tertiary treatment. On the discharge of the pump, Sodium
Hypochlorite dosing will be carried out for disinfection of the liquid in the tank.

A Typical SBR Cycle will consist of following stages:

Stage 1: Filling
During this stage the SBR Tank will be filled with the influent wastewater. In order to maintain
suitable F/M (food to microorganism) ratios, the wastewater will be admitted into the tank in a
rapid, controlled manner i.e. 20 cum/hr. This method functions similarly to a selector, which
encourages the growth of certain microorganisms with better settling characteristics.
Stage 2: Reaction
This stage involves the utilization of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia nitrogen,
where applicable, by microorganisms. The length of the aeration period and the sludge mass
determines the degree of treatment. The length of the aeration period will depend on the
strength of the wastewater and the degree of nitrification (conversion of the ammonia to a less
toxic form of nitrate or nitrite) provided for in the treatment.

Stage 3: Settling
During this stage, aeration will stopped and the sludge will be allowed to settle leaving clear,
treated effluent above the sludge blanket. Duration for settling will vary from 45 to 60 minutes
depending on the site trail.

Stage 4: Decanting
At this stage of the process effluent is removed from the tank by opening motorized valve on
drain line. The decanting process will be carried out without disturbing the settled sludge.

Stage 5: Idling
The SBR Tank waits idle until it is time to commence a new cycle with the filling stage.

Stage 6: Sludge Wasting

Excess activated sludge will be wasted periodically during the SBR operation. As with any
activated sludge treatment process, sludge wasting is the main control of the effluent quality and
microorganism population size. This is how the operator exerts control over the effluent quality
by adjusting the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration and the Mean Cell
Residence Time (MCRT).

c. TERTIARY TREATMENT:
The treated sewage from Filter Feed Tank will be pumped by Filter Feed Pumps to Dual Media
Filter (DMF) and Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) to remove all the suspended particles from the
treated water by DMF and off smell by ACF. The tertiary treated water will be collected in the
Treated Water Tank (Clients Scope) for further use like gardening / toilet flushing.
