Course Objectives

The Professional Communications Program is a six semester course that will equip students with
advanced written and spoken communication skills. The program focuses on preparing engineering
students for the future. Students will learn to speak with clarity, collaborate in teams, write
effectively, have confident body language and build a robust digital profile.

Course three of the Professional Communication Program focuses on students being able to
communicate fluently and efficiently by accurately using grammar and vocabulary. This enables
them to write, visualize and present confidently.

Module 1 Grammar and Vocabulary: Intermediate Level Grammar- Verb Patterns, 5


Present Perfect, Past Continuous and Past Simple: Actions in progress,
temporary actions and situations, Past Perfect: Time expressions,
Predictions- will and going to, Present continuous: Plans, intentions and
arrangements, Past simple, Obligation, prohibition, Real conditionals -
zero conditionals and first conditionals, Superlatives- Adjectives and
Adverbs
Module 2 Proposal Writing: Understanding Proposals, Types of Proposals, 5
Identifying purpose and audience, performing a needs analysis, writing
the goal statement, preparing an outline, creating a framework, creating
strong transitions, ghosting the competition, using illustrations,
proofreading and editing
Module 3 Report Writing: Determining the report objective, Types of report, pre- 5
writing- preparing your structure:modelling, brainstorming, outliner tools,
testing your structure; revising, report template, the report paradox,
reader focused structure and style, dovetailing your information, writing
persuasively, avoiding fused and fragmentary sentences
Module 4 Referencing: Methods of referencing- book references, references for 5
User Guides, reports, journal references, magazines and newspapers,
independent publications, unpublished sources, internet references;
using footnotes- source of a quotation or a diagram, explaining and
elucidating
Module 5 Graphical Analysis: Reading a table, bar chart, line graph; interpreting 5
information from pictograms, interpreting line graphs, reading and
amending a pictogram, using a distance table
Module 6 Advanced Creative writing: Prediction strategies, Dictogloss, reflection, 5
(*for 2016-20 previewing text content, Developmental Reading

Course Outcomes
1. Students will be able to develop effective reports and persuasive proposals by incorporating
fundamental writing techniques at an intermediate level (L3)
2. Students will be able to construct graphical representation of information by accurately interpreting
and visualising the given data ( L4)
3. Students will be able to apply intermediate English Grammar rules (parts of speech, conditionals,
tenses) to accurately form sentences (L3)
4. Students will be able to construct references by using a referencing style that is appropriate to the
type of academic writing (L6)
5. Students will be able to compose engaging creative writing pieces through techniques of
speculation and prediction ( L6)

Course Objectives

The Professional Communications Program is a six semester course that will equip students with
advanced written and spoken communication skills. The program focuses on preparing engineering
students for the future. Students will learn to speak with clarity, collaborate in teams, write effectively,
have confident body language and build a robust digital profile.

Course one of the Professional Communication Program aims at accuracy of spoken communication
by helping students sharpen their skills of grammar and vocabulary. It also focuses on email and
texting etiquette so that students can effectively communicate on paper and any digital platform.

reading, Focussing on ideas instead of sentences, Topicalizing, Copying,
Transcribing, Schematizing
Module 3 Creative Writing: Steps for Creative Writing, Prediction strategies, 7
Dictogloss, reflection, previewing text content, Developmental Reading
Module 4 Texting: Writing effectively, contractions, word and sentence structure, 5
greetings, etiquettes of texting
Module 5 Email Writing: Structure and Format, Body of the mail, Headers, Signature, 6
Dos and Donts, Punctuation, Email etiquette, Salutation, 7Cs of written
communication
