Learning Experience: Art Activity- Scrapbook Paper and Recycled Material Art
Programming Purpose:

The KF2 classroom is an emergent learning classroom in which children are encouraged
to continue projects that interest them as long as they would like. When this happens staff need
to ensure that the continuation of the project encompasses the use of new skills and allows the
children to continue to learn through their play. While we created microphones on my previous
day at placement, and the children showed a continuing interest in paper crafts on my next
placement day. For the next placement day I brought in a variety of new paper craft materials
the children have not used before in order to create an invitation for them to create their own
paper crafts of any type.
Objective:
The children will:
1) Engage in social behaviours when working with others to create projects and discuss
ideas about their creations.
2) Practice fine motor skills when using scissors, glue sticks and pencil crayons to create
collages and other paper craft collages.
3) Practice visual literacy skills when creating collages and other paper projects that will
allow the children to analyze shapes, size, colours, perspect and other aspects of the
images they use in their creations.
Materials Used:

Scrapbook Paper
White Printer Paper
Construction Paper
Childrens Magazines
Glue Sticks
Scissors

Pencil Crayons
Set Up:

Emergent Activity

1. I placed the paper craft materials as well as scissors, glue sticks and pencil crayons on
the classrooms arts and crafts table.
2. I used a variety of invitations to invite children to come to the craft table and explore
the materials.
3. As the children came to the table, they inspected the items and began to create their
paper crafts.
4. |The children began to use different tools to cut and paste pieces of pater to make
different objects.
5. Some children chose to create collages while others made dramatic pla materials.
6. Children were able to come and go from the table as they please. Many children also
creats groups projects that added on to other activities For example some children
created a second dollhouse while other children made figures to use in buildings and
cars they had built from lego.
7. The children continued to work on their projects for the rest of the morning.
8. ONce their projects were complete, they used them as toys during the afternoon and
during outdoor time. When the children were completely finished with the activity I
cleaned the table using paper towel and cleaning spray.

Additional Emergent Use of Materials:

Some students used cardboard and scrapbook paper to build a dollhouse as the
classrooms original doll house was already being used. They glued the cardboard to
create a cube shape and use paper to create a pattern for the walls and floors.
Two children used the materials to create new and improved microphones as an
extension of our previous activity. They used the paper to create patterns on the
handles of their microphones and added more paper to make longer microphones.
Some children found cootie catchers and door hanger patterns inside some of the
children magazines and this inspired some students to use the templates to create their
own. After they were created they were used to decorate the classroom.
Learning Strategy #1
Invitations

In order for the children to participate in the activity, I used a variety of invitations to pique
their interests in the materials.
Examples include:
As a non verbal invitation I placed different materials at each seat at the table as an
environmental invitations so that children could see what materials they were able to
use.
___ do you remember when we made paper microphones yesterday? Would you like
to build something else with the special paper we have today?
____would you like to use some scrapbook paper to decorate the structure you built
out of cardboard?
Learning Strategy #2
Questions

As the children were making their paper crafts, I used questions as a way to get teh children to
share their ideas and discuss what they were building.
Examples include:

I see youre making a cylinder with your paper, what are you planning to build?
I see you are cutting out pictures of characters from our magazines and gluing them to
a big piece of paper. Do you know what this kind of art is called?
What type pf scrapbook paper pattern is your favourite? Do you see a pattern in the
design that you like?

Overall Evaluation
What worked during this experience? Why?
The children were able to explore the materials and create any project they could
imagine.
The children were able to create items that they could use in other activities and parts
of the classroom. The variety of materials could be used to decorate items and create
characters for dramatic play.

What did not work during this experience? Why?

The children would sometimes overuse materials because they were overwhelmed by
the amount that was available to them. For example, they may have used full pieces of
scrapbook paper to cut out a small piece and throw the rest in the trash.

What might you have done differently?

Limit the amount of wasted materials by slowing bringing out as the original supply
was used up. Additionally, prior to the start of the activity we could have a quick
discussion about reusing materials and being sustainable.
