Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in
Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily grew up with her
younger sister, Lavina and her older brother Austin. She
grew up in a strong household run by her father, as she
didn't see her mother often, due to her being not being
emotionally accessible. Emily's father was a lawyer and
served as the treasurer of Amherst College, which made sure her
family was financially set. She withdrew from everyone and
everything, including her father and stayed in the house for the
last twenty years of her life to write poetry.

Live in Vain: Why I chose this Poet and Poem:
If I can stop one heart from breaking, I chose this poem because it talks about how
helping others, makes someone happier and feel
I shall not live in vain; better about themselves. And I chose this this poet
because I love the way she expresses her feelings

Haiku There are no specific rules for writing haiku; however, the structure of haiku is always the same,

Sonnet There are fourteen lines in a Shakespearean sonnet. The first twelve lines are divided into three
quatrains with four lines each. In the three quatrains the poet establishes a theme or problem
and then resolves it in the final two lines
Acrostic Poetry that contains certain letters, usually the first in each line form a word or message when
read in a sequence
Cinquain The first line is one word which is the title of the poem.
The second line contains two words which are adjectives that describe the title.
The third line has three words that tell the reader more about the subject of the poem or
shows action.

ABC Lines 1 through 4 are made up of words, phrases or clauses while the first word of each line is in
alphabetical order. Line 5 is one sentence long and begins with any letter.
Limerick A limerick is a humorous poem consisting of five lines. The first, second, and fifth lines must have
seven to ten syllables while rhyming and having the same verbal rhythm. The third and fourth
lines only have to have five to seven syllables, and have to rhyme with each other and have the
same rhythm.
Free Verse A Free Verse Poem does not follow any rules. Their creation is completely in the hands of the
author. Rhyming, syllable count, punctuation, number of lines, number of stanzas, and line
formation can be done however the author wants in order to convey the idea
Narrative A narrative poem tells the story of an event in the form of a poem. There is a strong sense of
narration, characters, and plot.
Epic Epic - a lengthy narrative poem in grand language celebrating the adventures and
accomplishments of a legendary or conventional hero
