Choosing a college to spend the next four years of my life at and choosing a major for a
career I will pursue for the next forty years of my life is not an easy easy task, this is something I
have learned upon hours and hours of scrolling through majors and from touring different college
campuses. I have toured six different colleges and looked at and been interested in upwards of
twenty different majors. The college search and major search is an anxiety inducing experience
filled with what ifs. In this paper I will discuss my college and major options in hopes to narrow
down my choices and figure out where I want to go and what I want to do for the rest of my life.
To begin with, the three colleges I am seriously considering are Eastern Kentucky
University, Wright State University, and The Ohio State University. A big factor for me is the
money because I do not want to be drowning in debt when I graduate college; that being said I
will probably go to the school that offers me the most money out of the three. I could go to
Shawnee State University for $2,000 a year but I want to go farther away from home. I havent
received scholarships from Eastern Kentucky or Ohio State yet, but I am hoping to hear back
from them soon. From Wright State I have received the merit-based scholarship titled the
States website, I would have to pay $9,650 per year. Eastern Kentucky said on their tour I
qualify for smart tuition which would make my cost of attendance around $21,000. Lastly, I will
have no word back from Ohio state until mid January; if I get no money whatsoever from Ohio

State it will be around $25,000 according to the tuition and costs on their website. As of now,
Eastern Kentucky is my favorite for reasons I will discuss in my next paragraph about the
colleges themselves.
Secondly, out of the three colleges I am seriously considering, I have toured two. The
first college I toured was The Ohio State University. I really wanted to love this college but
because it was the first college I toured, I did not know how to feel about it. Looking back on it
now, I think I liked it but I dont know if it was a good fit for me. The next college I toured, out
of the three serious, was Eastern Kentucky University. As soon as I set foot on Easterns campus,
I knew it was perfect for me. I did not have to question it, everyone there was so nice, I love their
accents, and it is an absolutely beautiful campus. After touring Eastern and sitting in and
listening to their presentations, we went to a job fair where I met Ka-Wing Wong who is the
Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science. Wong was extremely nice,
welcoming, and encouraging. He even invited me back on a individual tour to look at their labs
and to sit in on their classes. I loved how personable Eastern was while still being a large school;
this was much different than the experience I had at Ohio State. Before I had toured colleges I
thought I wanted a college that was big with big class sizes; Eastern made me realize I wanted a
big school with smaller class sizes. I am touring Wright State the 21st of December and I am
looking forward to it; I am really hoping I love it because if that is where I get the most money
(if it is much more than the money I receive at Eastern) that is where I will have to go.
College visits have also really helped me to narrow down my majors I have been looking
at. Originally I had been debating a major in Computer Science and also the major of Computer
Engineering or Computer Science and Engineering (program titles vary per college). Since I
have toured colleges I have realized that I want to focus on a major in Computer Science. The
Frasher 3
difference between Computer Science and Computer Engineering is that in Computer Science
you focus on creating software and fixing it or making it work more efficiently. With Computer
Engineering you do software but you also work with circuits to create technology. This is
something I did not understand before I toured labs and before I talked to Wong. I want to make
software and develop programs; I have little to no interest in building technology. According to
Best Value Schools, the median salary for a bachelors degree in Computer Science is around
$77,550 while PayScale states the median salary for a bachelors degree in Computer
Engineering is $79,604. For less than two thousand dollars more, the rigor and extra time that
will be needed to succeed in the Computer Engineering program is not worth it to me; especially
In conclusion, through the process of writing this paper I have realized more and more
what I want to do and where I want to go. Thus far, Eastern Kentucky University is by far my
favorite university and if money was not a factor, I would choose there. Unfortunately, money is
a factor so I will probably end up choosing Wright State University as my home for the next four
years of my life. Also, I plan to study Computer Science regardless of where I choose to go to
school. Talking about this information while conducting this paper made me put together the
pieces and face the reality I did not want to think about just yet. This paper has helped me to be
