Course Objectives and Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

The primary goal of CE 112 is to familiarize students with the behavior (stress, strain, buckling
and deformation) of structural members and materials when subjected to a variety of loadings
(bending, axial, torsion and shear). The engineering student is expected to build upon previously
acquired skills in mathematics, physics and statics to solve practical problems of mechanics.
This goal is accomplished through the treatment of the following subjects:

Through completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Calculate internal forces including axial, shear, bending and torsion and develop force
diagram.
2. Evaluate stress & strain using individual and combined loads.
3. Demonstrate the ability to transform stresses to arbitrary axes.
4. Explain the concepts of beam and shaft design.
5. Calculate beam deflection.
6. Explain the concept of buckling, critical load and stress calculation.
7. Students will be able to apply physics in solving mechanics of materials problems.

These objectives all meet the Program ABET Outcomes A & E.

Course Requirement and Assignments

Course Credit-Hours

This course is a 3-unit course.

Success in the course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit, a
minimum of forty-five hours over the length of the courses (normally 3 hours per unit per week
with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying or course related
activities.

Homework:

A list of homework problems for the material covered in each chapter is given on the
next table of this syllabus. Note that homework problems might be added or deleted
from the list as the semester progresses.
There are two components to the homework. The online (McGraw-Hill Connect)
homework is designed to give you practice problems with online tips and guided
solutions. Some of the homework problems are assigned to be handwritten and
uploaded. The Handwritten Homework will train you to present your work in a
professional manner. Both Online and Handwritten Homework for each lecture is due
one week after they are assigned. Homework timely completion and understanding
is essential for learning the material and performing well on the exams. More
details below.
It is the responsibility of the individual student to verify, in detail, the correctness of
the final results, calculations, diagrams, and solution methodology for each homework
problem.

Online Homework

The web address of the homework problems is:

https://connect.mheducation.com/class/m-soliman-fall-17-ce-112-sec-02-2
An access code is included with your textbook purchase. Please make a note of this code
in some safe place.
Support & Tips
If you have any issues while registering or using Connect, please contact McGraw-Hills
CARE team through http://www.mhhe.com/support. To avoid problems related to
unexpected technical issues, you are advised not to wait until the last moment to
complete assignments.

Handwritten Homework:

Handwritten Homework is to be uploaded, as pdf files, using your canvas account.

Check that your name and assignment number are on each page of your homework.
Check your homework record (posted in canvas) on a regular basis. If there is a
problem, see me before the exam for that section of homework.

Handwritten Homework presentation:

Your handwritten homework problem will be graded for both correctness and
presentation. The importance of being able to produce professional quality work will
become clear to you as you train to be a professional engineer; but in the beginning, it may
be hard! Example problems illustrating the presentation standards for the homework set
can be found in canvas.

clicker Technology:

In this course, we will be using clicker technology to collect student responses to

questions posted in class. Points will be awarded based on participation. Please DO
NOT purchase any clicker technologies.

You can use iClicker polling on a web browser or a mobile app. Students are responsible
for creating a free iClicker account using their SJSU student ID. Please see this step-by-
step guide for browsers and mobile applications on how to create your iClicker account.
After creating your account, please see this guide for adding your course.

You can find more information about iClicker at the eCampus website or at
www.iClicker.com.

Questions or issues about this technology should be sent to eCampus@sjsu.edu.

Class Policy

Please arrive to class on time: turn off and put away cell phones, laptop computers, and other
electronic devices during class. Instructor permission is required for use of laptop computers
and other electronic devices during class.

If you do happen to arrive to class late, please enter from the back door and take your seat
quietly.

Office Hours
Phone and email communication is most appropriate for administrative matters (notification
of illness, scheduling appointments, clarification of homework problems, etc.).
Because of the extensive use of Free Body Diagrams and figures, detailed solution
strategy to homework problems or other course material is best discussed in person
during scheduled office hours and not via phone or email.

University Policy Information:

Per University Policy S16-9, university-wide policy information relevant to all courses, such as
academic integrity, accommodations, etc. will be available on Office of Graduate and
Undergraduate Programs Syllabus Information web page at

CEE Policy

Enforcement of Prerequisites/Co-requisites Statement for Undergraduate Courses

All undergraduate students must hand in the following documents (as appropriate) to the
class instructor at the beginning of the third-class meeting:

1. A transcript (unofficial) showing that the student has the prerequisites and co-requisites
for the course with the required grade.
2. A copy of the assist.org document showing the equivalency for any prerequisites or co-
requisite if the course was taken at another university or a community college.
3. A signed equivalency forms if the prerequisite or co-requisite was taken at a college for
which an assist.org document is not available.
4. A copy of the students official schedule for the current semester indication enrollment in
a co-requisite course if the student is concurrently enrolled in a co-requisite.
5. For courses that require junior and/or senior standing, the instructor will check the class
roster to verify the required standing.

Students who do not meet the pre-requisites or co-requisites will be dropped from the
course. Students who are enrolled in the class at the beginning of the semester and fail to
produce the appropriate documents by the beginning of the third class meeting will be
dropped from the course.

Students who were not enrolled in the class at the beginning of the semester will produce
the required document(s) by the beginning of the third-class meeting after enrolling in the
course. Such students, who fail to produce the appropriate document(s) by the beginning
of the third class meeting after enrolling the course, will be dropped from the course.
