Microteaching Lesson Plan Assignment

Lesson Overview: Tire Patching

Student: Madeleine Hardy Assignment: Microteaching Date: Monday, May 29, 2017
UCID: 001107794 - tire patching

Topic: How to patch a bike tire Duration: 15 minutes

Group size: 6 - 9 learners Group level: beginner

Lesson Objective(s):

In this lesson students will learn relevant vocabulary related to a wheel of a bike, how to
patch a tire and how to properly use the tools.

Materials/equipment needed:

Materials needed:
Wheels x 4
Pumps x 3
Patch kits x 5
Tire levers x 8

Patch kits include: vulcanizing solution, patches, sandpaper (ensure no-one has allergies to
the glue)

Teaching method(s) used:

This lesson will be taught through the scaffolding method and hands-on experiential learning.
Modeling: demonstrating how to best use tools, hold the wheel etc.
Talking aloud: verbalizing each step, offering explanations
Choice and voice: engaging students in the learning by inviting them to choose how
we proceed
Hands-on experiential learning

Summary of tasks/activities:

Set out a wheel, a pump, a patch kit and 2 tire levers for every 3 students prior to the lesson.
Ask them not to touch the materials until asked.

1. Introduction: 2 minutes: Introduce self and activity. Assess the knowledge in the
room. Ask about previous bike experience and tire patching experience. Start with an
overview of some basic vocabulary: Wheel, rim, tube, spokes, hub, tire, bead and
valve. Use the wheel to model the new vocabulary.
2. Development & demonstration: 2 minutes: Introduce the activity and the objectives.
Inform them that theyll all be patching their own tire in small groups after a short
demonstration. Using demonstration as a teaching method, walk them through the
steps to take off a tire, check for a hole and then patch the hole. As you are doing this,
introduce the different tools and how to properly use them. Invite clarifying questions
for the group.
3. Development & hands-on: 6 minutes: invite them to work in groups of three to find
and patch holes in their own tires in front of them. As the learners are doing this walk
around, answer questions and provide guidance and support.
4. Conclusion: 2 minutes: Once students finish patching their holes draw the attention
back to the front of hte room. For the closing ask a (or a couple of) student(s) to
review the steps aloud for the class. Check to ensure all tires have been patched.
Collect materials and ask for any questions.

Assessment:

Learners should have a patched tire at the end of the lesson and should be able to explain the
step-by-step procedure.

Lesson Plan Notes:

This lesson plan is a condensed version and for the time limit indicated would likely only be
successful with competent adult learners. For students, adjust the lesson for additional time
(20 minutes at least for the main activity). Additionally concepts which can be explored
related to this topic are: bike safety (self, surroundings & bike), how to properly fit a helmet
and exploring hazards (ex. what could have popped the tire?).

Additionally, this plan could be augmented by allowing learners to first do the tire patching in
a small group and then secondly, doing the tire patching on their own. This will help solidify
the new skill for the learners.

Depending on the attention ability in the group the teacher could provide the group with a
choice of how to teach the lesson. The options being:
a. Proceed as a group step-by-step with the learners following along with their
own materials.
b. Listen and watch the teacher model the activity first, and then allow them to
explore it on their own with guidance and support from the teacher.
