Fly Away Episode One: "Oh La La"

INT. ANAS BEDROOM - NIGHT
ANA, an 18 year old college freshman, is seen in her video
blog on Youtube speaking into the camera. She sits in a desk
chair and leans into the camera as she speaks. She wears
pajamas.
ANA
So, thats the plan. Just some
friends, taking off from all the
drama and the shit, and just...
just going out to see the world.
Well, first the US, then the
world... But Im totally getting
ahead of myself. First, I had to
talk everyone into going...
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY
Ana sits at a long desk with JADE, a 20 year old college
student, beside her. The classroom is mostly empty, a few
students are still packing up to leave.
ANA
Well, we could try to, like, make
money as we go? Like, selling party
beads or something?

JADE
Party beads, Ana?
ANA
Yeah! Like those festiv--
JADE
No.
ANA
Oh, cmon! Do you have any better
ideas?
JADE
Yeah, we could wait? Save up some
funds--

ANA
No. We have to go now. Summer
starts tomorrow, and if we dont
leave now then were going to miss
the Corset Crawl.

Lilly, a 23 year old senior in their class, overhears them


talking from her seat in the front row. She turns around to
face them before she grabs her bag and walks over to them.

LILLY
Hey... Jade, right?
The girls look at each other and then look at Lilly.
JADE
Uh... yeah! Hey, Lilly.
LILLY
Hey. So, uh... did you say
something about a corset crawl?
Like, the one in New Orleans?
ANA
Do you want to go?
JADE
Ana!
ANA
What?
JADE
(whispering)
We barely know her!
ANA
So?

LILLY
Um... you know I can hear you,
right?
ANA
Five thousand dollars.

LILLY & JADE


What?
ANA
If you want to come: its five
thousand dollars. Were taking a
road trip. Its not just to New
Orleans. Thats just our first
stop.

JADE
Ana-
ANA
Five thousand dollars.

(CONTINUED)

LILLY
Are you serious?
Ana stares blankly back at Lilly.
LILLY (CONT.)
Alright.
JADE
Wait, what?

LILLY
Alright. But I get to bring a
friend.
JADE
Wait a--

ANA
Done. Well pick you up tomorrow.
Whats your address?
EXT. SCHOOL YARD - CONTINUOUS

Ana and Jade are sitting in the grass outside of the art
building on campus.
JADE
Ashe isnt going to like it.

ANA
Shell get over it when she finds
out weve got the trip paid for.
JADE
Yeah, paid for, but at what cost?
What if homegirls actually, like,
some psycho?
ANA
Shes not a psycho, shes a medical
student... and her parents are
loaded.
JADE
How do you know that?

ASHE, Jades 21 year old deaf girlfriend, walks up and joins


them in the grass.
JADE (CONT.)
(signed)
Hey, baby.

(CONTINUED)

Ashe waves to them both then sits beside Jade.


ANA
Now we just need to get a van...
JADE
A van? I thought we were going to
take my car?
ANA
We cant take a car! We wont have
enough room for all the stuff well
need.
Ashe has been reading lips and turns to Jade to offer her
idea.

ASHE
(signs)
We need a van?
Jade nods and rolls her eyes.

ASHE(CONT.)
(signs)
I have a van!
JADE
(signs)
Really?
Ashe nods excitedly.
JADE (contd)
She has a van.
ANA
Seriously!? Sweet! Okay... So
youll just pick me up from my
house?

EXT. RANDOM HOUSE - CONTINUOUS


Ana stands outside of a random house.
Jade is driving the van around a corner when she spots Ana.
Ashe is riding shotgun. Jade stops the van beside Ana.
Ana keeps walking, not realizing its her friends in the
beat up van.
Ashe rolls down her window, Jade calls out to Ana.

JADE
Hey!
ANA
Oh! Hey- Hey, guys! I, um... I got
excited and- youre early! Um...

JADE
Are you okay?
ANA
Me? Oh! Yeah! Great. Im great...
What the hell are you driving?
JADE
Your chariot, princess.

Ana looks over the van with some trepidation and then loads
her bags into the trunk and opens the van door. Lilly and
GREG, a 22 year old track runner, are in the van already.
ANA
Who are you?

LILLY
This Greg.
GREG
Hey.

ANA
Hi?
LILLY
He runs track at school.

ANA
Cool, but um... why is he...?
LILLY
You said I could bring a friend.
ANA
Right.
Ana crawls into the van, sitting in the far back. Greg
closes the van door. The van begins to move again.

INT. FLASHBACK ANAS BEDROOM - NIGHT


Flashback to Anas video. She is in the same pjs as before,
it is as though the video is continuous from before.
ANA
Jades picking me up after she gets
everyone else tomorrow. I havent
even told my mom. I dont know how
I would. I dont even know what to
say to her anymore.

ANAS MOTHER(O.S.)
(distant and muffled)
Ana!
Crashing is heard in the distance. Ana winces, looks behind
her, then looks back to her computer.
ANA
I cant stay here anymore.
Thudding sounds are heard in the distance.

Anas door begins to rattle behind her as her mother bangs


on it from the other side.
ANAS MOTHER(O.S.)
(muffled)
Open this fucking door, Ana!
ANA
Well, I gotta go guys. Ill try to
check in when I can.

ANAS MOTHER(O.S.)
(muffled)
Ana!
Banging continues on the door.

ANA
Catch you on the flip side, guys!
Anas video blog ends.

INT. VAN - DAY


The group laughs and cuts up in the van, theyre driving
down the road. No heard dialog, only the music of "Oh La La"
can be heard.

Ana is seen sending a text that says Im on my way.

EXT. VAN - CONTINUOUS


The van drives away down the road and fades to the song and
credits rolling.
INT. ANA LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Anas mom comes home drunk and slams the door.


ANAS MOTHER
Ana? Where are you-you-you
little... ungrateful... stubborn...
ANA. Where. Are. You? How could...
how could you just... just run off
like that? Huh? You some sort...
some sort of track-track runner?
Huh? YOU A TRACK RUNNER, ANA?
Youre not a track runner...
Anas Mother bangs on her bedroom door. No answer. She bangs
again. No answer. She slings the door open.
She notices no one is in the room. She spins around and
looks around the living room.
ANAS MOTHER (contd)
Ana, where are you?
(beat)
Ana?
(beat)
Ana!
INT. VAN - CONTINUOUS
As Anas Mother describes her missing daughter over the
phone, Ana is shown in the van with her friends.
Ana is leaning against the window, looking out at the
passing scenery.

ANAS MOTHER(V.O.)
I dont know where she is... I
cant find her.. DONT TELL ME TO
CALM DOWN! Shes missing! Please,
my baby is missing...

"Oh La La" plays on the radio as the mothers voice becomes


drowned out by the radio and the group of friends singing
along.
