The global energy transition is well underway, with record new
additions of installed renewable energy capacity, rapidly falling
costs and the decoupling of economic growth and energy-related
carbon dioxide emissions. Innovate and more sustainable ways of
meeting our energy needs are accelerating this uptake.
The Mexico International Renewable Energy Conference
(MEXIREC) will showcase how this diversification is occurring, not
only in Latin American and the Caribbean but elsewhere in the
world. The design of the conference reflects the importance of
a systems approach to energy, where the generation and use of
renewable energy is looked at from a cross-cutting perspective.
This includes social participation, in the form of universal energy
access, socio-economic co-benefits and empowerment of
marginalised social groups and local communities, supporting
infrastructure such as transmission and distribution networks,
balancing supply and demand measures, including through
efficiency measures, and sector coupling as well as a wide range of
enabling technologies.
The conference is also reflective of the commitments of the
Mexican government to a long-term target of 50% clean energy by
2050 and that of the German government to achieve a carbon-
free economy within the same time period. MEXIREC also builds
on the success and outcomes of previous IRECs and marks the
7th conference in this global series following on renewables2004
(Bonn/Germany), BIREC 2005 (Beijing/China), WIREC 2008
(Washington DC/US), DIREC 2010 (Delhi/India), ADIREC 2013 (Abu
Dhabi/UAE) and SAIREC 2015 (Cape Town/South Africa).
It is our honour to welcome you to MEXIREC. It is our hope that it
will serve as a catalyst for renewables both in the Latin American
and Caribbean region and globally, helping to meet the energy
needs for all in a clean, affordable and sustainable manner.

El rcord de nuevas adiciones de capacidad instalada en energa
renovable, as como la rpida cada de costos, aunados al
desacoplamiento del crecimiento econmico y las emisiones
de dixido de carbono dependientes del uso de energa, estn
cimentando la transicin energtica mundial. La innovacin y otras
formas sostenibles de satisfacer nuestras necesidades energticas
ayudan a acelerar este cambio.
La Conferencia Internacional de Energa Renovable de Mxico
(MEXIREC) mostrar cmo esta diversificacin ocurre, no slo en
Amrica Latina y el Caribe sino en otras partes del mundo. El diseo
de la conferencia refleja la importancia de un enfoque sistmico
de la energa, donde la generacin y el uso de energa renovable se
observan desde una perspectiva transversal. Esto incluye participacin
social a travs del acceso universal a la energa; cobeneficios socio-
econmicos y empoderamiento de grupos sociales marginados y
de comunidades locales; infraestructura de apoyo, como redes de
transmisin y distribucin; medidas de equilibrio de la oferta y la
demanda, incluyendo medidas de eficiencia y acoplamiento sectorial;
as como una amplia gama de tecnologas habilitadoras.
La conferencia tambin refleja los compromisos del gobierno
mexicano a travs del objetivo fijado a largo plazo del 50% de energa
limpia para el 2050 y de los objetivos del gobierno alemn para
lograr una economa libre de carbono en el mismo perodo. MEXIREC
tambin se basa en el xito y los resultados de los anteriores IRECs
y marca la sptima conferencia en este espacio internacional sobre
energas renovables: 2004 (Bonn / Alemania), BIREC 2005 (Beijing
/ China), WIREC 2008 (Washington DC / US) y DIREC 2010 Delhi /
India), ADIREC 2013 (Abu Dhabi / UAE) y SAIREC 2015 (Ciudad del
Cabo / Sudfrica).
Es un honor para nosotros darle la bienvenida a MEXIREC. Esperamos
que sta sirva de catalizador para las energas renovables en la regin
de Amrica Latina y el Caribe, y en el mundo, ayudando a satisfacer las
necesidades energticas de todas las personas de una manera limpia,
asequible y sostenible.
