Further reading: Chapter 1, section 1.1 and 1.3 Koretksy, Engineering and Chemical Thermodynamics.
Questions numbers in brackets refer to the book.
Section A
1. Indicate whether each of the following statements is true (T) or false (F).
An open system:
(a) Can exchange matter with the surroundings - True
(b) Is otherwise known as a control volume -True
(c) Can exchange heat with the surroundings True
(d) Has no boundaries - False

2. Correctly match up the following pairs:

a. kettle i. open system

b. Thermos flask ii. closed system
c. pump iii. isolated system

3. Is density an extensive or intensive property? What about volume? Explain your answer.
Density is an intensive property, since this property does not depend on the size of the system.
Density is a ratio, it will always be the same regardless of how much of the sample it measured.
Volume is an intensive property as well since this property does not depend on the size of the system.

4. A gas is heated inside a rigid, sealed container on a hotplate. Is this an example of:
I) Isothermal (ii) isochoric (iii) adiabatic or (iv) isobaric process?
This is an example of an isobaric process

5. Write down an approximate length, using appropriate prefixes (table on page 3), for the following:
a. 1 small molecule - HCL bond length is 0.12745 nm
b. 1 billion molecules (in a line) -
c. A cell -
d. A drop of water from a leaking tap -
e. The room you are sitting -

6. (1.4) Determine three ways temperature is measured and three ways pressure is measured in a
laboratory.
Kelvins, Celsius, and Fahrenheit
Pascals, kilopascals, atmospheres

1. Convert:
a) 0.02 cm3 to dm3 -> 0.00002
b) 200 kcal to kJ (1 J = 0.0002388 kcal) -> 837.521 kj
c) 789 mm Hg into kPa (conversion table on page 3) -> 105.1737 kpa

pV
2. Use the ideal gas equation : R to find units for the gas constant R in terms of SI primary units (table
nT
on page 3). r gas constant units is j mol^-1k^-1, pressure *volume (PV) is equal to si units of energy.

3. (1.31) Estimate how many moles of air are in the room in which you are sitting? What is its mass?
(Take MWair = 0.029 kg/mol)

4. Using the ideal gas equation, sketch P vs v (molar volume) for an isothermal process.

5. You pump up a bicycle tire to a pressure of 400 kPa on a day when the ambient air temperature is 27 C. Find
the specific volume of the air in the tire.
(Take MWair = 0.029 kg/mol)

6. (1.19) The ideal gas model is one example of an equation of state. Why do you think it is termed an equation
of state? Under what conditions is it valid?

Section C
1. The pressure in a car tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the air temperature is 25
C, the pressure gauge reads 210 kPa. If the volume of the tire is 0.025 m 3, determine the pressure rise when
the air temperature rises to 50 C. How much air (in moles) must be bled off to reduce the pressure to 210
kPa gauge if the temperature remains at 50 C?

2. (1.14) When a system contains regions that differ in physical structure or chemical composition, an overall
value can be assigned to its properties. Consider the system, system 1, shown below. It contains n a
molecules in state a and nb molecules in state b.
a) Develop an expression for the extensive volume V 1 in terms of the volumes of each
homogeneous region Va and Vb .
b) Develop an expression for the intensive molar volume v 1 in terms of na, nb and the molar
volumes of each homogeneous region va and vb
c) Generalize the result of part (a) to come up with an expression for any extensive property, K 1, in
terms of the extensive properties Ka and Kb.
d) Generalise the result of part (b) to come up with an expression for any intensive form of the
property in part (c), k1, in terms of na, nb and the intensive properties ka and kb.
