n Feb. 13, Second Amendment advocates and other patriotic Americans were
shocked with news of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalias sudden death
at the Cibolo Creek Ranch in West Texas. An avid sportsman, the 79-year-old had
spent the previous day on a quail hunt. His body was found the next morning in
his room, his death attributed to natural causes.
Justice Scalias passing puts the Second Amendment at a crossroads. As I will explain
below, his replacement will either reinforce the Supreme Courts recognition of the individual
right to keep and bear arms or contribute to its ultimate destruction.
But first, we should pay tribute to this legal giant and the indelible mark he left on Americas
constitutional understanding after nearly three decades on our nations highest court.
Antonin Scalia was born in 1936 in Trenton, N.J. His father was an Italian immigrant and his
mother was the daughter of Italian immigrants. He grew up in Queens, N.Y., as America was
struggling to rebound from the Great Depression and then emerging victorious in World War II.

grip design that includes changeable backstraps and grip side panels accommodating all

The VP trigger surpasses those found on competitors and has been widely hailed as a ground-

by a short positive reset. Add in features like controls that are completely ambidextrous, HKs
patented charging supports for better gripping to rack the slide rearward, and a cold hammer

know this is a little late, but Capt. Dale Dyes article Small Arms Of The

to Phu Bai then on up to Hue to reinforce the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. I was

able to stay a day or two where a friend took the attached photo of me with a

overat least as far as I was concerned.
I was interested to see Capt. Dye mention the liberation of various arms
from World War II that had been in a Vietnamese armory. I thought the photo
might rekindle some memories. Semper fi, Capt. Dye.

calling the jockeys to the starting gate might still be wafting
through the hills when the NRAs 2016 Annual Meetings & Exhibits
comes to Louisville, Ky., May 20-22.
The annual gathering, sponsored by Midway USA, brings together
the NRA family to celebrate our right to keep and bear arms. If recent
years are any indication, the event is sure to draw a crowd. Last year,
more than 78,000 attended the festivities in Nashville, Tenn.
The agenda offers a mix of business and pleasure.
On the business side, members will have several opportunities to
hear from NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and NRA-ILA
Executive Director Chris Cox. And, with this being a presidential elec-
tion year, distinguished pro-gun leaders will participate in the NRA-ILA
Leadership Forum, where they will inspire and inform attendees about
issues regarding our rights.
On the fun side, attendees will be able to stroll through more than
600 exhibitors booths at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The exhibition
hall will include representatives from every major firearm and accessory
manufacturer, plus hunting outfitters who will let you book the hunt of
a lifetime. Family activities, such as air gun shooting, will also be avail-
OCC Cycle on the Block able, and Toby Keith will be the lead after-hours musical entertainer.
If youre looking for a way to support NRAs missions, consider one of
our three auctions. The NRA-ILA Annual Dinner & Auction (presented by
Kimber Manufacturing) will give attendees a chance to bid on guns, col-
lectibles and even an Orange County Choppers motorcycle, donated by
Pell Industrial. The National NRA Foundation Banquet & Auction (spon-
sored by Kimber, Henry Repeating Arms and Universal Coin & Bullion,
with Carl Zeiss Optics as a contributing co-sponsor) will put a tricked-out
Black Ops Jeep Wrangler on the block. The Womens Leadership Forum
Luncheon & Auction, with entertainment by ventriloquist and comedian
Terry Fator, will offer a great collection of items for its silent and live auction.
So, grab your mint julep and saddle up for a fun ride that will last a

The simple answer is that many of the TV Western stars
from the 50s and 60s were actually much faster than
any of the old-time gunfighters could ever imagine.
The secret to their speed was a double-thickness, metal-
lined leather holster designed by the late Hollywood gun coach
Arvo Ojala (although famed Saddlemaker to the Stars Ed
Bohlin also marketed a metal-lined holster, Ojala was the first
to patent the concept). The Ojala Model No. 1 exposed the trig-
ger guard and hammer and, due to its metal lining, created a
no-friction rig that permitted a Colt Single Action Army to be
cocked while still in the holster without binding the cylinders
rotation as the gun cleared leather. Of course, this was always
done with studio blanks, never with live ammunition.
Ojalas technique, which he taught to countless motion
picture and television actors, was to slap the hammer of the
holstered gun with the thumb (thereby cocking the action) while
drawing the gun by grasping the grip with the bottom three

Of The Year: Hornady ELD-X
Managing Editor Joseph Kurtenbach, in his feature titled, We Have The
Technology (January 2016, p. 66), took us behind the scenes at Hornady
Mfg. Co. to find out how its ballisticians developed perhaps their best bul-
let ever, one that delivered excellent terminal performance on close- and
extended-range targets, and offered true match-grade accuracy. In the
process, Hornady also finally cracked the code on the vexing problem of
varying ballistic coefficients exhibited by polymer-tipped projectiles in
flight. Kurtenbach witnessed the phenomenon firsthand as the anomaly
was recorded on airborne projectiles using Doppler radar. He also took to
the field in Africa for practical hunting experience that proved the new
projectiles worked on game. The melt-resistant polymer Hornady used in
the tip of its new ELD-X bullet meant the elimination of inconsistent bul-
let performance in flight, giving target shooters and hunters alike a new
level of accuracy, consistency and predictability from their ammunition at
long range. According to Kurtenbach, the development was likely to have
far-reaching implications for the entire ammunition industry: In order for
consumers to make informed decisions about what ammunition best suits
their needs, all ammunition will need to be tested using the best technol-
ogy, currently Doppler radar its a practice that I hope will be adopted
by the industry at large.

It was about the rifle. It was always about the rifle. Every
single 19th and 20th century retelling of the Glass saga cites
the recovery of his rifle as his prime motivation.
Glass lived another 10 years, trapping and trading from St.
Louis, to Taos, to Santa Fe, and in 1833 he found himself back
where his journey had begun in 1823, along the banks of the
Grand River in northwest South Dakota. He was back in the
land of the Arikaras. This time his luck failed to hold out for
him. He and two other trappers were set upon by 30 natives
while they attempted to cross a frozen river. Glass and his
trapping companions were all killed.
But the story of Glass gun does not end with his death.
A short while later the Arikaras responsible for Glass death
appeared at the camp of other trappers and feigned to be
friendly Mandans. Their deceit wasrevealed when one of the
men, Johnson Gardner, recognized Glass rifle. It had to be
a unique beauty, as Fitzgerald had clung to it for 10 months
while he thought Glass had been turned into worm food.
Gardner, too, saw the rifle for what it was, a rare and unique
specimen of Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Once he realized
the faux Mandans could only have killed Glass to possess it,
he set upon them with a vengeance, killing them all.
So in the end, it was Glass rifle that bought him 10
years of extra life, and it also avenged him after it had
ceased to be of earthly use to him.
