1. With neat circuit diagram explain some commonly used D.C motor drives. Also mention their appli-
cations in various fields. [16]

2. A separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three phase semi controlled converter connected to a
3 phase 400V, 50 Hz source. The motor constant is 0.4 v-s/a. Total field and armature resistance is
1Ω. Assuming continuous and ripple free armature current at a firing angle of 400 and at a speed of
1000rpm. Determine

(a) Motor current and motor torque.


(b) Power delivered to motor.
(c) Reactive power drawn from the supply VAr. [16]

3. With neat sketch explain how speed transition takes place from motoring to braking.

4. Explain the Dynamic Breaking of Separately excited D.C motor by Chopper control. [16]

5. (a) Starting from fundamentals prove that torque developed by the Induction motor is proportional
to square of the supply voltage.
(b) Draw the speed torque curves for different voltages fed from stator voltage controller. [8+8]

6. A 3 Phase,1500 rpm Induction motor is developing torque of 3000 Syn. watts at an input frequency
of 50Hz. If the motor torque is now reduced to 1500 Syn.watts, determine the new value of stator
frequency. The motor is operating in constant HP region. Assume constant rotor frequency and neglect
effect of rotor resistance.

7. Explain static motor resistance control for speed control of I.M. Draw speed & torque charecterstics.

8. In variable frequency control of asynchronous motor why (V/f) ratio is maintained constant up to base
speed and V constant above base speed. Draw the relevant characteristics. [16]

1. Derive the Speed, Torque Equations of a semi controlled converter connected to separately excited
D.C motor with continuous current operation with necessary waveforms. [16]

2. Derive the speed and torque expressions for a three phase semi controlled converter connected to a dc
series motor. [16]

3. (a) What is 4-quadrant operation and explain with converters?


(b) Give a simple circuit for the speed control of a dc separately excited motor.

4. (a) List the advantages offered by dc chopper drives over line-commutated converter controlled dc
drives.
(b) A dc chopper controls the speed of dc series motor. The armature resistance Ra = 0.04Ω, field
circuit resistance Rf = 0.06Ω, and back emf constant Kv = 35 mV/rad/s. The dc input voltage of
the chopper Vs =600V. If it is required to maintain a constant developed torque of Td = 547N-m,
plot the motor speed against the duty cycle K of the chopper. [8+8]

5. A 3φ, 4 pole, 50Hz SCIM has the following circuit parameters r1 =0.05Ω r2 = 0.09Ω, x1 + x2 = 0.55Ω
The motor is star connected and rated voltage is 400v. It drives a load whose troque is proportional
to the speed and is given as T1 = 0.05w NW-M. Determine the speed and torque of the motor for a
tiring angle of 450 of the AC voltage controller on a 400v, 50Hz supply. [16]

6. Discuss in detail how the variable frequency control of an Induction motor can be achieved using
Current source Inverter. Mention the advantages and limitations of the above method. [16]

7. Draw the circuit diagram and explain the operation of rotor- resistance control using chopper. Mention
the advantages and disadvantages of the above method of control. [16]

1. Explain in detail the operation of a full- converter feeding a D.C series motor with reference to voltage
and current waveforms, Assuming that the motor current is a continuous one. [16]

2. Explain the Speed torque Characteristics of a dc series motor connected to a three phase fully con-
trolled converter. [16]

3. A dc shunt motor has the armature resistance of 0.04Ω and the field winding resistance of 10Ω. Motor is
coupled to an over hauling load with a torque of 400N-m. Following magnetization curve was measured
at 600 rpm:

Motor is braked by self excited dynamic breaking with a breaking resistance of 1 ohm. At what speed
motor will hold the load? [16]

4. A 230V, 960rpm and 200A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.02Ω. The
motor is fed from a chopper, which is capable of providing both motoring and braking operations. The
source has a voltage of 230V. Assuming continuous conduction: When motor is operated in Dynamic
breaking, with Braking resistance of 2 ohms

(a) calculate Duty ratio of chopper for a motor speed of 600 rpm and breaking torque of twice the
rated value
(b) What will be the motor speed for a duty ratio of 0.6 and motor torque equal to twice its rated
value? [16]

5. Discuss in detail with suitable diagrams how the speed of a 3 phase cage type Induction motor can be
varied using A.C. voltage controllers. Also draw the various types of AC voltage controllers which are
used for speed control of Induction motor.

6. Discuss in detail how the variable frequency control of an Induction motor can be achieved using
Current source Inverter. Mention the advantages and limitations of the above method. [16]

1. A 200V, 10.5A, 2000 rpm, Shunt Motor has the armature and field resistances of 0.5 and 400 ohms
respectively. It drives a load whose torque is constant at rated motor torque. Calculate motor speed
if the source voltage drops to 175V. [16]

2. Explain the basic operational aspects of three phase fully controlled converters with neat sketches of
the waveforms and the circuit diagram. What is the effect of free wheeling diode. [16]

3. Draw and explain the operation of Dual- Converter in circulating and .Non-circulating current control
methods. [16]

4. Derive the expressions for average motor current, RMS motor currents, Torque, and average motor
voltage, for chopper fed D.C separately excited motor. [16]

5. Draw the following AC voltage controllers for varying the speed of a 3 phase Induction motor

(a) Star connected controller


(b) Delta connected controller
(c) Delta connected Stator and controller.

Discuss in detail about the above types of controllers. [16]

6. A 440V,50Hz,4 pole 1420 rpm delta connected Induction motor has the following parameters.
Rs = 0.35 Ohm, Rr ’ = 0.4 Ohm, Xs = 0.7 Ohm, Xr’=0.8 Ohm. The motor is fed from a Voltage
Source Inverter. The drive is operated at a constant (V/f) control upto 50 Hz and at rated voltage
above 50 Hz.
Calculate the breakdown torques for a frequency of 75 Hz both for motoring and braking operations.

7. Draw the circuit diagram and explain the operation of rotor- resistance control using chopper. Mention
the advantages and disadvantages of the above method of control. [16]

8. (a) What is the basic difference between true synchronous mode and self control mode for variable
frequency control of Synchronous motor?
(b) When operating in true synchronous mode, why the frequency must be changed in small steps?
