Instructional Objective

After a lesson on centimeters and inches students will measure various objects using centimeter
rulers and meter sticks, as well as complete a handout where they measure various objects
around the classroom with 80% accuracy.

CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

2.MD.1 : Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers,
yardsticks
Indicator: This will be evident when the students measure the lengths of various objects around
the classroom.
2.MD.3 : Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
Indicator: This will be evident when the students decide what tools to use to measure the
lengths of the objects in the classroom.

ISTE Standard 4: Critical thinking problem solving and decision making.

Indicator: This will be evident when the students use the QR codes to solve problems online
with the IPAD.

Motivation
The teacher will begin the lesson by telling the students that before the math lesson today they
are going to help re decorate the room starting with the rug. The teacher will then ask the
students which rug they like on the smartboard. After a rug is chosen they will measure the
length of the rug in the classroom.

Strategies

Direct Teacher Instruction: Direct teacher instruction will be given at the beginning of the
lesson with the motivation and introducing the concepts of the lesson.

Group Discussion: Students will discuss the best method to measure the carpet in the
classroom. Ideas will be generated and discussed as a class.

Cooperative Learning: Students will be told that they are going to build a new shelf for their
science textbooks, they will be asked to work in pairs to measure they science books to find how
large the shelves should be.

Adaptations

The student with with visual impairments will be given an ipad with
overvoice and other accessibility features.
The ELL student will be given an adapted worksheet with limited
vocabulary and wording to make it more comprehensible.

Differentiation Of Instruction

Tier one: With the help of a labeled ruler students will measure various objects using centimeter
rulers and meter sticks, as well as complete a handout where they measure various objects
around the classroom with 80% accuracy.

Tier two: Students will measure various objects using centimeter rulers and meter sticks, as well
as complete a handout where they measure various objects around the classroom with 80%
accuracy.

Tier three: Students will measure various objects using centimeter rulers and meter sticks, as
well as complete a handout where they measure various objects around the classroom with 80%
accuracy, as well as complete at least one QR code.

Developmental procedures

The lesson will begin with the teacher introducing the motivational activity. The teacher will tell
the students that before the math lesson today they are going to help re-decorate the room
starting with the rug. The teacher will then ask the students which rug they like on the
smartboard. After a rug is chosen they will measure the length of the rug in the classroom. (what
tool should we use to measure the rug)(lets try using the centimeter ruler we used yesterday) The
class will measure the rug with the centimeter ruler and determine why that was not the best tool
to use. The class will then use a meter stick and discuss why that was a better tool to use. After
the rug is measured the teacher will record the length of the carpet on the smartboard.
Following the teacher will tell the students that they will also build a new bookshelf for the
science textbooks.(what would be the best tool to measure your science textbook) Students will
then work with their partner to measure the height of their textbooks.(how high will the shelf
need to be to hold our textbooks)(how long will the shelf need to be) Students will then be asked
to come up and stack their textbooks on top of one another creating a pile. After all books are
stacked the teacher will ask the class what tool they should use to measure the pile. The pile will
be measured to determine the length the shelf would need to be. Answers will be recorded on
the smartboard. The total measurements needed for the bookshelf will be discussed and
recorded. Following the teacher will have partners find places around the room where the
bookshelf would fit. The class will be brought back to the carpet and answers will be discussed.
The teacher will then tell students that since they now have so much experience measuring
objects they can go around the roo independently and measure objects and record them on their
sheet that will be distributed.

Assessment

Students will measure various objects using centimeter rulers and meter
sticks, as well as complete a handout where they measure various objects around the
classroom with 80% accuracy.

Students will use ipads to walk around the room and discover QR codes
which will take them to various websites for measurement reinforcement and challenges.

Independent practice

Students will measure objects around the room with various measurement
tools and record their findings on the worksheet.
Students will use ipads to walk around the room and discover QR codes
which will take them to various websites for measurement reinforcement and challenges.

Follow-up: Direct teacher intervention and academic enrichment

For the student in need of academic enrichment, they will use ipads to
walk around the room and discover QR codes which will take them to various websites
for various problems and challenges based on the day's lesson.
The teacher will work directly with the student in need of intervention.
The various measurement tools will be reviewed, in additional the student will be asked
to visit the site Khan academy for a more visual approach to the topics covered in the
days lesson.
