Chapter 10: Suicide Prevention. Mental Health: Facing the Challenges, Building Solutions,

World Health Organization, 1/1/2015, pp. 75-82.

This chapter of the book was put together by the World Health Organization, and is

focused on Suicide Prevention. This section covers statistics of suicide, and how suicide rates are

an increasing problem in the world. The impact on society is talked about, as well as the risk

factors involved, and possible reasons as to why people commit suicide. Lastly, the section

covers how we can build solutions to prevent more suicides from happening, one way being to

challenge the stigma of mental health.

From what I have read, Ive learned many new facts about suicide prevention. The

statistics are very surprising, and so are the risk factors. This article is relevant to my inquiry

because it covers how the stigma of mental health in society leads to an increased rate in suicide,

which is my exact inquiry.

This source is credible for a few different reasons. The World Health Organization is a Commented [DJ1]: Omit; just state the facts.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Violence Prevention. Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 19 July 2016,

www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/suicide/statistics/index.html.

The Centers for Disease Controls website includes a lot of information about suicide

prevention. It talks about the risk factors, the protective factors, and the prevention strategies. It

also briefly goes over the consequences of suicide which, by reading about, can help prevent it. Commented [DJ3]: A bit too concise.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it includes risk factors for suicide. I learned

that suicide can sometimes happen when there is a family history of suicide. I also learned that if

you lose a family member or friend to suicide, your chances of committing suicide increase. This

information is relevant because it shows how earth-shattering suicide is to everyones lives.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wrote the information on this

website. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made the website. This source is

credible because it was written by a federal organization and put on a government website.

Aspa. What Is Mental Health? What Is Mental Health? | MentalHealth.gov, Department of

Health and Human Services, 12 Mar. 2013, www.mentalhealth.gov/basics/what-is-mental-

health/index.html. Commented [DJ4]: MLA doesnt use dividers.

This website was written by the Department of Health and Human Services. It talks about mental

health and the importance of it. It covers thee early warning signs of bad mental health, and what

bad mental health can lead to. It also states facts about mental health, and corrects myths. Commented [DJ5]: Needs more detail.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because I believe taking mental health more

seriously in our society will lead to less suicides. This website covers the importance of mental

health. I learned that 1 in every 10 young people experience major depression at some point. The

fact that so many people are affected by bad mental health just further proves my point that it

should be taken more seriously.

The Department of Health and Human Services is a credible source because it is

government operated, and has to be accurate. Commented [DJ6]: Omit this. Tell more about the
Department of Health and Human Services, not just that it is
government run.

Mental Illness and the Family: Recognizing Warning Signs and How to Cope. Mental Health

America, Mental Health America, 8 Dec. 2016, www.mentalhealthamerica.net/recognizing-

warning-signs. Commented [DJ7]: Remove the shading.

This website focuses mainly on recognizing the warning signs of depression and other

mental illnesses. It also goes over how to cope with them. Commented [DJ8]: This is not a summary. This is a
sentence.
This source is relevant to my inquiry because it emphasizes the fact that you should be

able to take time off to focus on bettering your mental health. This is an important part of my

inquiry. It also stated facts about how mental health differs in different age groups, which is

something that should be recognized in society.

Mental Health America is a credible source because the people who publish it are

psychologists and know what they are talking about. Commented [DJ9]: Be more specific. Names, degrees,
affiliations.

Suicide Statistics AFSP. AFSP, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2017,

afsp.org/about-suicide/suicide-statistics/. Commented [DJ10]: Remove shading.

This website covers the statistics of suicides in detail. It has charts that display the

statistics of suicides by age, race/ethnicity, methods, and attempts. Commented [DJ11]: Not a summary.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it includes many statistics about suicides. I

now have a better idea of who is more prone to suicide, as well as the methods involved. Commented [DJ12]: Your responses got shorter and
shorter.

The AFSP is a website dedicated to preventing suicides, therefore has accurate

information. Commented [DJ13]: Not enough to prove credibility.

Names, degrees, affiliations, etc.

Jessie,

You just did the minimum on this assignment. I realize it was difficult to process this

information, but you needed to write more on each of the required paragraphs: summary,

relevance to inquiry, and credibility.

We dont have power over much of what happens in our lives, but we do have control over how

we process what happens. It has only been a few years since you lost your friend. Sometimes

these inquiries help people, but I can see in your case it was too soon.

Just remember, hindsight is always 20/20, and we couldnt know then what we just didnt know

or see. Be gentle with yourself.

I would like for you to finish this assignment before posting it to the Digital Portfolio, so you can

earn more credit there.
