Module Associate/Internal Moderator Dr Fatima Mahieddine

Component 001 50%

You will be working in predefined groups of 3 and will be adopting peer review assessment
to assess your project contribution.

Chemical discipline:

Plant 3D / Solidworks / MS Visio / Navisworks (50%)

Student are to produce a fully integrated model and associate documentation for the
laboratory equipment given (see Chemical laboratory sample pdfs) which cover basic
processes such as filtration, fluid flow, distillation, extraction and air separation that are
commonly found in many Chemical industries.

Submitted project items will include:

A fully integrated Plant 3D model of the equipment issued

A process description, PFD, line and stream tables
Process equipment models (use of Solidworks)
Piping and Instrumentation (P&ID) diagram to relevant standards
Additional components and support structures as necessary
Relevant model views, sections, annotation / documentation to adequately
communicate the process.

Grading details for this assignment is given in the marking scheme and relates to
complexity, accuracy, correct modelling techniques / methods and project ownership.

Aspen 10%

Students are given an introduction to Aspen Plus, the chemical engineering industry
standard process simulation software. Students are taught the basics of energy and
material balances in another module and they carry out simple process plant simulations
using AspenPlus.

Marks are awarded for:

Accuracy representation of real process flow sheets. Whether the Expectation List of
items are present (Feed flow compositions, Input parameters (pressure, temp), unit
operations, sensitivity analysis, output parameters.

Project Ownership (the ability to drive the software effectively and to understand to some
extent the various simulation software available in the chemical industry and their
limitations.

Mechanical / Medical discipline:

Solidworks (60%)
Student are to produce a fully integrated model and associate documentation of a
mechanical or medical device or complex assembly similar to the ones presented (see
previous sample projects) The component will incorporate parts, assemblies, constants,
geometric tolerances and detailed drawings commonly found in a Mechanical or Medical
device field.

Submitted project items will include:

A fully integrated Solidworks model of the assembly

Detailed component design models
Assembly and product structure
Documentation (layout and methodology)
2D and 3d drawings (assemblies and BOM)
Additional components and files as necessary
Relevant model views, sections and annotation /documentation to adequate
communicate the design intent and assembly function.

Grading details for this assignment is given in the marking scheme and relates to
complexity, accuracy, correct modelling techniques, feature sets used, modelling methods
and project ownership.

Civil discipline:

Revit (60%)
Student are to produce a fully integrated model and associated documentation for the given
Design and Access Statement (see sample pdf)

Submitted project items will include:

External Both Structural and Architectural components, surrounding site, site plans
topographical information
Internal Basic layout, area plans and internal components
System components HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical systems
Relevant model views, sections, annotations to adequately communicate the
building design intent and to show the model to good effect.

Grading details for this assignment is given in the marking scheme and relate to
complexity, accuracy, correct modelling techniques and project ownership.

Component 002 40%

All disciplines:

MATLAB (40%)

Students will be introduced to the basics of MATLAB programming through practice coding
exercises and problems. They are encouraged to register with MathWorks to access their
online resources and their self-paced course Onramp training.

Student are to produce a MATLAB program/script and support material for a discipline
themed engineering problem.

Full marks are awarded:

If they document the Matlab code created.

If they explore alternative coding and whenever possible investigate at least one
alternative way of solving a question.
If their m-file is error-free.

Marks will not be awarded for the code after the line where a runtime error occurs.

Each assessment due date will communicated in advance before the before the
assessment due date. Submission will be though the Blackboard VLE system.

Group and individual feedback sessions will be facilitated for each assessment.
