Preface

While the classroom is perfect place to learn the fundamental

concept of each school subject, this is simply not enough on its
own. Educational trips show students how their subjects apply to
the real world. There are no doubt those kinds of college tours
contribute to the development of skills and the acquisition of
knowledge. Studies of languages, science, the arts, geography and
history can all be greatly enhanced outside of the classroom.

Many students lose interest in subject in the classroom, as they are

unable to see how they apply, from a practical perspective, to the
real world. An educational tour to, for instance, a beautiful
destination can help these students to see how their education in
such practical example can be of use. This can help to re-ignite
their interest in the subject. It has also been shown that student
tend to retain what they learn more easily if relevant tours are made
in conjunction with a topic they are currently discussing in the
classroom. The college educational tour to the cities of Chandigarh
and Manali helped us to know more about the places, their people,
the culture, arts, crafts, cuisines, historical influence and to
experience on much larger scale.

With effortless and wonderful planning and under the guidance of

our madam Mrs. Anupama Srivastava and we had an amazing
experience, which was full of fun and learning. I thank my professor
from the bottom of heart for giving us such a wonderful opportunity
to visit and explore the land of Chandigarh and Manali.

Manali

Manali is one of the most popular, beautiful and awe-inspiring hill

stations in this country. Surrounded by majestic hills and woody
forests, the quaint charm of Manali has captured the world's
attention and has become one of the most visited tourist
destinations in India. The pristine River Beas flows right through the
town, creating a mesmerizing and spellbinding landscape. Nestled
at one end of the Kullu Valley, Manali is a popular hill station with
attractions such as the Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley nearby.
Rohtang Pass is covered with snow throughout the year and is a
good experience in itself.

This is the ideal place for tourists looking to unwind and rejuvenate
in the lap of nature, for there are no place in the country more
vibrant and charming as Manali. Manali is also used as the base
town for the Manali-Leh highway and Leh is around 479 km from
here. Lahaul and Spiti district can also be accessed from here
during the summers using the same highway.
Hadimba Temple

Situated atop a hillock the Hadimba Devi Temple is surrounded by

thick deodar forests and was built in 1553. The temple is dedicated
to the Rakshasa Hidimba who was also the wife of the Pandava
Bhima. The temple structure is built in a distinctive architectural
style that somewhat crosses Indian architecture with the one
employed in the Buddhist monasteries. The structure is made
primarily of wood and 70 meters from the temple also lays the
temple dedicated to Ghatotkacha, the son of Bhima and Hidimba
and a hero of the Mahabharata war.

Aar Kay Shawl Factory, Kullu

Kullu Shawls are well known all around the world for its simple and
elegant designs and its fine woolen fabric and manufacturing
quality. Kullu shawls are worn by both: men and women, but mens
shawls are usually called "Loi" or "Pattu" and are often plain without
any pattern or very minimal patterned stripes on two edges.
Kullu shawls are mostly made of three types of wool: Merino wool,
Angora wool and local sheep wool. These different kinds of wools
are sometime used combined to make more varieties. Designs
patterns are mostly geometric shapes with few exceptions where
floral designs are used. Prices of Kullu shawls depend on these
factors: design patterns, the amount of those patterns in shawls, the
wool type and the quality of the fabric made of those wools. Prices
can range between Rs. 800/- to Rs 10,000/-. Higher cost shawls are
also available in the market but they are often difficult to find.

Chandigarh

Chandigarh is the best-planned city in India, with architecture which

is world-renowned, and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. As
the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union
Territory of Chandigarh it is a prestigious city. The face of modern
India, Chandigarh, is the manifestation of a dream that Pt.
Jawaharlal Nehru envisaged and Le Corbusier executed.
Serenity and a city are two diametrically opposite concepts, which
however, get belied in the 'City Beautiful'. Chandigarh is a rare
epitome of modernization co-existing with nature's preservation. It is
here that the trees and plants are as much a part of the construction
plans as the buildings and the roads. Indias first planned city, is a
rich, prosperous, spic and span, green city rightly called THE CITY
BEAUTIFUL .

Sukhna Lake

Nestled at the foothills of Shivaliks, Sukhna Lake is a beautiful lake

set amid the picturesque surroundings. Quite popular amid the
locals and visitors, the place is a perfect destination for solitude
seekers.
Sukhna Lake is a man-made lake at the foothills of Himalayas
stretching along 3 km. With its pristine blue water, the lake serves
as a perfect location for a stream of morning joggers and walkers
who can also enjoy the fresh air. Apart from serving as a delight for
artists and photographers, the lake is also a spot for water sports
activities such as boating, yachting, and water-skiing under the
clear sky. It is home to several species of fishes and migratory birds
such as Siberian ducks and cranes. Bounded by a golf course on
the south and popular Rose Garden towards west, the lake offers a
mesmerizing view for its visitors at all time of the day.

How to Reach Sukhna Lake

Chandigarh has an excellent bus service managed by Chandigarh
Transport Undertaking. It is a very convenient method of traveling to
Sukhna Lake. If you are staying in a location close to the lake, auto
rickshaws are just apt. Alternatively, the best way to reach Sukhna
Lake is through a taxi.

The Sukhna Lake Trail

Chandigarh and Sukhna Lake are almost synonymous. Most
definitely, you can do all the clich things at Sukhna Lake like have
a boating experience, or maybe take a walk around the lake in the
evening; there's a lot more that you can do here. To make things
more new and innovative, you can now have a Shikara ride (similar
to the ones at Kashmir) too! There is a dedicated cafe to the lake
known as CITCO cafeteria that has both indoor and outdoor
seating; outdoors, from where the scenic beauty can be enjoyed, in
addition to spot souvenir shops to buy little curios! If that was not
enough, there is a camel outside the lake that offers tourist camel
rides, right by the lake! Or, ditch everything and sit in the rock stairs
of the lake with your better half, and enjoy the sunset in an uncanny
silence!

Architecture of Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake is a 3 km long artificial lake created in year 1958 by
damming the seasonal stream, Sukhna Choe that comes down
from Shivalik Hills.
Facts about Sukhna Lake

Rock Garden

A symbol of imagination and novelty, this one is of its kind garden

spread across an area of 64 acres. Nek Chand, a former Road
Inspector in Chandigarh, has designed the Rock Garden as an
open-air exhibition hall using urban and industrial wastes.
The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a sculpture garden in
Chandigarh, also known as Nek Chand's Rock Garden after its
founder Nek Chand, a government official who started the garden
secretly in his spare time in 1957. Today it is spread over an area of
40 acres. It is completely built of industrial and home waste and
throwaway items.
Various sculptures made up of broken ken glass bangles,
chinaware, discarded fluorescent tubes, clay and coal dot the
premises. Walls of terracotta pots and the maze of paths, canyons
and chambers display the great creativity. There is also a 14-
chamber edifice with a
waterfall, puddles,
statues of animals and
birds. The Rock
Garden is one of the
prime attractions of
Chandigarh and is a
must visit.

Best time to visit

Rock Garden
You can visit the
garden all year round.
Summers are
relatively hot so could
be avoided
How to Reach Rock Garden
The nearest railway station to the Rock Garden is Chandigarh train
station that is 5 km away. The rock garden is situated at Uttar Marg
in Sector 1, 1.5 km from Sukhna Lake if you are travelling by cab.
History of Rock Garden
Nek Chand started the garden secretly near Sukhna Lake in 1957.
He would collect waste materials from around the city in his spare
time and use them to build structures on a forest buffer land. His
work continued for 18 years and spread over 12 acres through a
complex of interlinked courtyards. It was based on his vision of the
divine kingdom of Sukarni.
It was discovered by the authorities in 1975 and might have been
demolished on the grounds of being illegal, but was saved by
popular public opinion. Nek Chand was then put in charge of the
park and given a team of 50 laborers to work on his project. The
park was opened to the public in 1976. Around 5,000 people today
visit the garden daily.

Attractions in the Rock garden

It consists of man-made interlinked waterfalls and many other
sculptures that have been made of scrap and other kinds of wastes
(bottles, glasses, bangles, tiles, ceramic pots, sinks, electrical
waste, etc.), which are placed in the walled paths. The sculptures
are mainly made from recycled ceramic.
Pinjore Gardens

Spread over a massive area of 100 acres and also known as

Yadvinder Garden, Pinjore Garden is a spectacle to behold.
The work of creating the gardens began in the seventeenth century.
Covering a total area of 100 acres, the Chandigarh Pinjore Garden
serves as the venue of the annual event of mango festival during
Baisakhi (April to June). The garden houses a mini zoo, historic
places, Japanese garden, nursery and a number of picnic spots.
According to the Hindu mythology, it is said that it is over here that
Pandava brothers have rested during their exile.

History
Early in the 17th century,
Nawab Fidai Khan, a
reputed architect and the
cousin of Mughal
Emperor Aurangzeb,
made the design for the
Pinjore Gardens. At that
time, the Nawab was the
Governor of the Province
and during one of his
tours, he happened to visit the Pinjore valley. He was so enchanted
with the beauty of the place that he thought of making a beautiful
garden there and this is how the concept of the gardens came into
being. The Nawab designed the garden as per the classical
Charbagh pattern and introduced a central waterway in the area.
He planned both sides of the waterway to be planted with the
patches of green bordered with flowers, along with cover the entire
place with a number of trees, like traditional palm, cypress and
magnolia.
While Pinjore Gardens were still being created, goiter struck the
women of the place. The courtiers of the Nawab immediately left
the place, which forced him to quit as well. The palace later fell first
under the reign of Raja of Sirmaur and finally, in 1775 AD, under
Maharaja Amar Singh of Patiala. The latter consolidated Pinjore to
his lands. He had a great admiration for the beauty engulfed in the
garden and used to visit the place frequently. Amar Singh is
credited with to improve the garden manifold. In 1966, Haryana was
declared as an independent state and Pinjore Garden was handed
over to it. Today, the garden continues to be one of the prime
attractions of Haryana.

Pinjore Garden park ticket rate/ entry time and fees:

Open all day of week
Entry: from 07:00 AM to 08:00 PM
Entry fees: 20 R.s
Pinjore is a place to visit when one is searching for genuine feelings
of serenity and to invest some quality energy with family and
companions. The top attractions of the town are as per the
following.
Yadavindra Gardens

The beautiful greenery enclosures are known as Asia's best

seventeenth-century Mughal gardens, and the Hindustan Machine
Tools (HMT) production line. The terraced gardens include the
Rajasthani Mughal style Sheesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, and the Jal
Mahal comprising of a progression of waterfalls and wellsprings.
Pinjore greenery enclosures are flanked with one of a kind tree and
give brilliant sight come dusk. Worked in the seventeenth Century,
they were renamed Yadavindra plants after Maharaja Yadavindra
Singh, the last leader of Patiala. They are said to be made by the
modeller Fidahi Khan, Aurangzeb's cousin and trusted lieutenant.
Sheesh Mahal and Rang Mahal

About Sheesh
Mahal and Rang
Mahal: The Royal
living

arrangement in the premises of the Mughal Gardens is a beguiling

incredible sight. It was the place the ladies would live amid their visit
to the garden. The perspective of the garden from the Sheesh
Mahal traverses all through, beginning from the doors towards the
limit divider. At the following level is the Rang Mahalliving
arrangement of the Maharaja of Patiala. This too has a scene
perspective of the garden and the plantation encompassing the
slope. It just turns out to be more staggering under the moonlight.

Bhima Devi Temple

Situated close to the Pinjore gardens, the sanctuary was worked
out of the remains of an old sanctuary between the eighth and
eleventh century AD. It has been announced as a secured
landmark under the 'Punjab Ancient and Historical Monuments and
Archeological Sites and Remains Act-1964'.
The remains of the sanctuary have been tastefully masterminded in
an outside historical centre example, comprising of icons of
Apsaras, Gandharvas, divine beings and goddesses, creatures, and
suggestive pictures of the contemporary circumstances. The most
appealing component of the sanctuary is the icon of Lord Shiva.

About Bhima Devi Temple: Affectionately known as the Khajurao

of North India, the Bhima Devi sanctuary is acclaimed for its sexual
figures.

Pandava Cave
About Pandava Cave: Pandava Cave has one of its closures in the
town of Solan, while the other one is in the Bhima Devi sanctuary
complex of Pinjore. One of the zones contained under a trek known
as "Karol ka Tibba", the strange surrender is amidst an
encompassing of meadows, thick woods, and little lakes in addition
to other things. It is accepted to be the most established and the
longest buckle in the midst of a dim and premonition
environment in the Himalayan area.

Seven Terraces
About Seven Terraces: Wellsprings that run the whole length of the
garden can be seen from the numerous porches of seven levels.
One can look past the channel of water, listlessly walking around
the porches. One level after the other, the magnificence and grand
environment just improves itself, crossing the cut dividers of the
patios. It is charming to stroll along the cobbled ways and imagine
the excellence of the wellsprings.
