This written part of the assignment should show all the calculations necessary and
be submitted on paper to instructor.
Heres some information you may need:

Hes redoing the whole yard. His 2003 Ford F-150 XL pickup truck has a bed 80
inches long, 69 inches wide, and 20 inched deep. The truck averages about 17
miles to the gallon, and gas cost $3.79 a gallon when you figure this out.

The landscaping company where he will buy the topsoil is 9 miles away and it
takes about 20 minutes to drive there. They sell the topsoil for $18 a cubic yard, in
quarter cubic-yard increments. If the company delivers the top soil, it charges an
additional $30 for each large truckload which has an 18 yd3 capacity.

1. To find out how much top soil is needed, first use the overhead photo to estimate
the yard size minus the house and driveway.
About 5900 square feet
2. Estimate how much topsoil is needed to fill that space 4 inches deep.
About 72.84 cubic yards
3. How much topsoil can the pickup truck carry?
2.37 cubic yards
4. How many pickup truck loads are needed to transport all the topsoil, and what
would it cost?
31 truckloads at $1438.40
5. How many truckloads would the landscape company make to deliver all the top
soil, and what would it cost?
4 truckloads at $1434.00
6. Besides the cost of delivering the topsoil, what other calculations are important to
compare delivery by the company to hauling your own? Do those calculations.
Driving time which would be about 20.67 hours of driving time, whereas the delivery would
about 2.67 hours.
7. Would you recommend that your neighbor pick up the soil himself or pay for
delivery? Explain.
We would recommend the delivery truck deliver the topsoil rather than himself.
1. The yard is about 5900 square feet.

Space Dimensions Area

Lot: 120 ft x 70 ft 8400 ft2

House: 30 ft x 50 ft and 10 ft x 20 ft 1700 ft2

Driveway: 40 ft x 20 ft 800 ft2

8400 ft2 - 1700 ft2 - 800 ft2 = 5900 ft2

2. It would take about 72.84 cubic yards of topsoil to fill the yard.

(5900ft2/1)(4in2/1)(1ft/12in)(1yd3/27ft3) = 72.84 yd3

3. The pickup truck can carry 2.37 cubic yards of topsoil.

(80in/1)(69in/1)(20in/1)(1ft3/1728ft3)(1yd3/27ft3) = 2.37 yd3

4. It would take the pickup truck 31 truckloads at $1438.40 to deliver the topsoil.

(72.84yd3/2.37yd3) = 31 truckloads

($18/1yd3)(73yd3/1)+(9mi/1)(2/1)(31trips/1)($3.79gal/17mi) = $1438.40

5. It would take the delivery truck 4 truckloads at $1434.00 to deliver the topsoil.

(72.84yd3/18yd3) = 4 truckloads

($18/1yd3)(73yd3/1)+($30/1trip)(4trips/1) = $1434.00

6. To compare the two cost, it would be eective to also calculate the total amount of driving
time the pickup truck and delivery truck would take to deliver the topsoil to the house.
Driving time for the pickup truck would be about 20.67 hours whereas it would take be
about 2.67 hours for the delivery truck.

Pickup Truck: (31trips/1)(2/1)(20mins/1)(1hr/60mins) = 20.67 hours

Delivery Truck: (4trips/1)(2/1)(20mins/1)(1hr/60mins) = 2.67 hours

7. We would recommend that he pay for the delivery of the soil as it is $4.40 cheaper than the
cost of self-delivery, as well as the fact that it would take less time and it would be easier
on him as he would not have to deliver and unload the soil himself while having to still
refinish his yard. Plus in the amount of time that the delivery truck would take to deliver the
topsoil, he could save himself some time by purchasing the sprinklers and grass seed he
also needs.
