Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Lesson Plan Format

Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills
Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson
Grade 2:

Develop and demonstrate reading skills in response to text by: a.

using text features to make and confirm predictions, explain why
not confirmed b. asking and responding to relevant questions c.
seeking clarification and using information/ facts and details about
texts and supporting answers with evidence from text d. retelling a
storys beginning, middle, and end and determining its central
message, lesson, or moral e. monitoring comprehension and making
corrections and adjustments when understanding breaks down.

Learning Objectives/Goals
The lessons objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student
needs
Students will make predictions about a small moment (mentor text)
using the book, A Chair for My Mother.

Students will describe their predictions using evidence from the

beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Students will compose a writing scroll underlining evidence in the

book that leads them to their predictions.

Students will infer what will happen next using their schema and
evidence from the book.

Essential Questions/DOK
Higher Order Questions (scaffolding questions to get to the overall lesson concept
What is a prediction?

When do we make predictions?

What is the beginning, middle, and end of a story? Where can we find these
parts of a story?
Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)
Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson

Before: Whole class discussion using an anchor chart

During: Participation while they generate their scrolls.
After: Completion of the the scroll with a sequence of events.

Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their needs

I will model how students will complete the first page of their scroll. We will do this together as
a class. I will do periodic check ins to make sure there are no questions or concerns.

Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives
Students will have a scroll of white paper (about three feet
long) where either the beginning, middle, or end of the story
takes place.
Whatever section the group receives, they will have a printed
copy of the text and pictures from the pages of the book that
display either the beginning, middle, or end.
Students will read their part of the book, and underline key
works, phrases, or sentences, that can lead them to make a
prediction about what will happen.
Each group should have a different response.
The beginning group, should have predictions about what will
happen in the middle of the story, the middle group will write
about predictions for the end of the story, and the end group
should write about what could happen after the book, or if
there was a sequel to the book.
Students will be collaborating with each other
Students will share their findings with their classmates at the
end of this lesson

Resources and Materials

List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson

White Scroll paper

A full print out of the book A Chair for My Mother
Colored pencils
Crayons
Markers
Pencils

Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction
and student learning

Classical music will be playing on the smart board

An image of the book will be up on the smart board for a visual and
reminder of what they should be doing

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences,
etc.

Accommodations: Students with a learning disability can work in a group where someone can
be the scribe and they can help come up with ideas and suggestions for their scroll.

Gifted students can work on more text that they have to dissect and make predictions on.

Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior
needs to help keep students on task and actively engaged
I will monitor students behaviors and check in on groups every few minutes to make sure they
are on task.

Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the
learning objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way

Students who finish early may read to self or buddy read until the rest of the class finishes. They
may also come up with a skit of the story and perform this for the class if they choose to do so.

Follow-up to Todays Lesson

Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student understanding
and interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit)

An exit ticket for the day will be telling me their favorite part about working in groups to write
about the story! We will revisit this tomorrow for another book.
