4 Historian Part (Tell about the history of Senegal)

(Main events)
- So, Republic of Senegal is a country in West Africa. Its capital
city and also the largest is called Dakar. Dakar is a vibrant city
known for its lively markets and rich musical culture.

France gained possession of Senegal in 1840 and made the

country part of French West Africa in 1895. In 1946, Senegal
became part of the French Union which was a political entity
created by the French. Fourteen years after that, Senegal
became independent as part of the Mali Federation. The
Federation collapsed within four months and became a separate
republic with Leopold Senghor as its first president. Right now,
Senegal's current president is Macky Sall.

In terms of economy, Senegalese economy has traditionally

revolved around a single cash crop, which is the peanut. The
government, however, has worked to diversify crops and
agriculture by expanding into commodities such as cotton,
garden produce, and sugarcane as well as by promoting
nonagricultural sectors.

However, poverty still remains a serious presence in Senegal.

5 Tap News Reporter + Local Citizen

(Interview a local citizen about the problem: cause + effect a/b poverty)
- Hows your life? : My life isn't very good. I have little money to
survive. Also, sometimes I can't grow crops because the weather
is so bad. The rain doesn't fall and it is nearly drought. I don't
have that much money to buy more food. I can't afford education
for my children too.
- Causes:One of the main causes that make us Senegal people
become poor is the main job of Senegal people is agriculture.
Because of most of us work in agriculture, our main income
depends on it. However, Senegal has poor geographical location
and the weather condition is bad so sometimes it's hard to grow
and sell crops which make the crops become too expensive to
buy sometimes. Also, most of us don't have access to education
so we don't have a lot of skills to make money and we can't
afford education for our children too so the cycle of poverty
continues. Also, I heard that in 1970s there was a population
explosion in our country which led uncontrolled migrations to our
cities. Our transportation infrastructure deteriorated. Urban
employment and underemployment increased significantly. I
think that make Senegal fall into the state of poverty.
- Effects: A lot of time, we have to suffer from hunger since we
dont have enough money to buy food. Other than hunger, lack of
education and child labor are very obvious. I've seen children
drop out of school and work in the informal sector. Also, as a
result of poverty and poor economy, many of us emigrate to
other countries. Many people also get diseases because they
don't have access to clean water and sanitation and they also
don't get enough nutrition. Furthermore, poverty causes street
crimes to be very common in Senegal especially in our urban
areas. There are theft, robbery, and scams since people are
desperate for money.

12 We acknowledge that we have poor economy. We have already

provided a plan called Plan Senegal Emergent or PSE. So, the main
goal of our big plan is to improve the living conditions of the populations
or reduce poverty. There are several projects that are parts of the plan.
One of our projects is build a seawater desalination plant to obtain
drinking water that can be usable for irrigation. The location is the
coastal area of the country. With this, we will be able to provide clean
water and sanitation for our citizens. This will make our people become
healthier. With their healthy conditions, they will work better and it will
improve Senegals economy. Another project we have is create 100-150
aggregation projects (farms) in the sectors of horticulture (fruits and
vegetables) and livestock (dairy, poultry, etc.) and their locations will be
Niayes, Senegal River Valley, South Zone, and Central Zone. This will
promote even more agriculture business and this will result in more
production and exports which will increase income, improve the
economy, and help in reducing poverty.
