Genre Analysis

This paper consists of numerous articles that will provide examples of our human nature,

how we have affected each other and our surroundings based on our social needs and wants.

Certain articles will consist of one or many genres, others consist of meeting the constraints of

ethos, pathos, and logos. With these constrains, providing rhetorical articles written by the

authors to prompt their argument, we will be able to analyze each article to identify how these

constraints are used in the articles.

Rhetorical Issues

Ethos, Pathos and Logos are used in support towards rhetorical writing. The RWS

handbook gives specific criterion that improves written articles. Logos consist of the thesis of the

story, what the author is trying to say whether it is a message a comment or just an idea they

liked to share. Pathos deals with the emotion of the text, the tone the article is trying to set,

either it touches on emotional or it is simple just informational. Ethos deals with the credibility

the author receives based on his academic education and research. Depending on his information

and sources, the author may also qualify himself as a primary source. An example of this would-

be Trevor M, Letcher who is the author of the book Climate Change and also a major in biology.

Ethos, Pathos and Logos are just constraints towards a more scholarly written article that meet

their own certain criteria. The RWS NFG guide has provided articles where they show how

ethos, pathos and logos will take form.

Articles Analysis

The RWS NFG provides three articles, Organ Sales Will Save Lives by Joanna MacKay,

Our Blind Spot about Guns by Nicholas Kristof and Black Friday: Consumerism Minus

Civilization by Andrew Leonard. Each article seemed to have its own specific thesis based on the

article. Organ Sales Will Save Lives by Joanna MacKay, were the argument of organ selling is

introduced. According to MacKay, Governments should not ban the sale of human organs; they

should regulate it. Lives should not be waisted; they should be saved (pg.156). its a problem

that would be treatable if the sale of organs was legal. Allowing the sale of organs legally would

produce beneficial finances for those in poverty, but cause a problem by allowing them to take a

risk and sale a kidney which would cause more frequent use of medical facilities. The author

uses pathos in this article to inform the reader as to the consents we have towards our own self,

whether negative or positive. One positive outcome from organ sales would be the reduction of

death rates per year. Death rates do not only happen in organs but also between guns and cars.

The author Kristof makes a comparison that ever since the 1920s cars and guns have had

the same involvement in danger towards society. The truth is we regulate cars quite

intelligently, instituting evidence-based measure to reduce fatalities. Yet the gun lobby is too

strong, or our politicians too craven, to do the same for guns (pg.162). The author uses logos

here because he argues that only the market for auto safety has evolved, as for guns have

remained the same, which makes its fatality rate to remain the same between guns and cars. This

is a problem the author points out because of the lack of evolution we have done to make guns

safer. As the author states Yet as weve learned to treat cars intelligently, weve gone in the

opposite direction with guns (pg.163). He has managed to support as to why he makes his

argument.

The final article written by Andrew Leonard claims as to how heavy advertisement has

been towards Black Friday. On (pg.166) the author shows a clear example on how companys

use promotion videos such as the target lady to psychologically encourage the need of wanting

to shop on Black Friday. It is a high risk to want to shop on exact midnight due to a heavy wave

of the population wanting to be first to claim low price advertisement shopping, this makes the

worst behavior of human nature to come out naturally out of everyone. The time Black Friday is

scheduled to start is also a cause to this, due to everyone having celebrated thanksgiving earlier

that day some people might be under the influence or just even plain tired. Based on all three

articles a structural evidence shows as to where the lower class in society is to be the one

affected by either fatality rates, high risk and psychological manipulation based on their financial

statuses. Financial statuses and lower-class societies are not the only thing that can affect fatality

rates, high risk dangers and psychological manipulation in humans. Climate change is a factor

that can also affect these criterias no matter the financial status.

In the book Climate Change, author Trevor M. Letcher (2002), mentions the greenhouse

effect (pg. 3). The greenhouse effect is the specific name used by scientist to describe gases in

the air. Climate change has been affected by human activity. This has been proven by NASA

numerous times. They state that the amount of human activity with pollution as well as over

population is causing the rise of carbon dioxide, gases that humans are creating in the air

(pg.10). The rise of Carbon gases only promotes a hotter weather. High levels of carbon and the

mixture of hot temperature will start melting the ice caps in both the north and the south pole.

This will only create a rise in the sea level, that will then create a chain of different weather

events such as high tide. Natural disasters are bound to become more normal as human carbon

activity increases, the seasons and weather temperatures will begin to change. His intro statement

deals with the lack of education people have towards knowing what the greenhouse effect really

is. The lack of knowledge between societys only shows the lack of carefulness we have towards

our own surrounding environment. Letcher states we get a lot of these greenhouse facts from

infra-red radiation satellite data. These satellites provide prerecorded information from past to

future predictions based on our natural human activity.

Based on these articles, we can see state that the similarities between the articles

are based on information on society interactions. These articles provide us with information were

each author introduced their argument. The constraints of ethos, pathos and logos were all met

between the articles. Due to societies daily living, some of these articles will change within time

or remain the same.
