Common Core Sample Performance Task: Students describe how the character of Bud in
Christopher Paul Curtis story Bud, Not Buddy responds to a major event in his life of being placed in
a foster home. [RL.2.3]

Description of Student with Reading/Writing Challenges: This particular third grade student
struggles with reading comprehension. He cannot recall information within a given text on his own. He
gets a card with question prompts on it to assist him in asking himself questions as he reads. He also
struggles with describing without a visual image. This student is currently unable to put himself within
a characters shoes.

Question Response
What is the discrepancy between the student The text would have to be modified to fit this students
and the task? reading level. The student struggles with reading
comprehension. This would limit the students ability
to understand the story and describe the character
within the story.
What types of differentiation might be needed? I would have someone read the story aloud to him. I
would also incorporate technology. By providing
multiple means of learning the student will be able to
access his education independently. I would also
provide him with the notecard of prompting questions
so when the reader stops he can remember to ask
himself those questions. I would also provide that
visual image of an outline of the main character for
him so we can discuss how to describe the character
visually.
What might an intensive personalized This student needs to be able to recall information
instruction plan look like for this student? when reading in order to describe the character in this
performance task. I would have a picture of the main
character out so the student can visually see them
and as we read he can jot down some important
descriptions, feelings or actions related. I would put
this student in a small group setting where he can

engage with other students. The student would be
able to learn from the other students as well. Peer
collaboration and modeling will be key. The lessons
would be small and build upon one another. For
instance, one mini lesson would be about the
character and another lesson would be filling out the
character chart. Once the student has the
comprehension piece down then he can be able to
describe the character in Bud Not Buddy. Intervention
Central had some great strategies to work on
comprehension with struggling students. I often go
there for this student and it seems to benefit him.
Incorporating more technology into these mini
lessons, has made this student excited to learn as
well.
