Attention Grabber Ask students to come and join me at the carpet
Transition to Body We have discussed what a Community is. Can we remember what a community
is? Can we think of any communities we are apart of? We are becoming great
observers when thinking about different communities. When we think about
these different kind of communities we can know more about the world!
Body Time
Learning Activity #1 Rural and Urban:
o There are two types of communities we can live in! Does anyone
remember the two different words? Yes, we can live in a rural
community or a urban community

o What are some things that tell us we are in a rural community?
o What are some things that tell us we are in an urban community?
o Show Pictures of different communities. Is this community urban or
rural? Go through examples why we think rural or urban?

Building our own Communities:
o Tell students we will be building our own communities both a rural and
a urban out of different materials
o One of our poster boards will be an urban community
o One of our poster boards will be a rural community
o Students will be asked to start making one building for one of the 35 mins
communities
o They can use many different materials (show exemplars of buildings)
o We will need sky scrapers and farm houses
o When students are done buildings we will glue the buildings and
accessories to make different communities, both rural and urban

Rationale
Students have been learning about communities and different communities for previous
two classes. This activity to is engage students in the concept of community. We are able
to build a community together; however, showing difference between rural and urban
communities. This activity will allow me to formatively assess if students are
understanding the difference between rural and urban.
