E-Portfolio Essential II: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology

Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008), a document providing nine
Essentials, a curricular framework that outlines the expected outcomes of graduates of baccalaureate
nursing programs. (AACN, 2008, p. 3) The Essentials includes necessary requirements and
recommendations for the core knowledge required of all healthcare professionals (AACN, 2008, p.
3).This passage will focus on Essential II- Basic Organizational and Systems
Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety. This Essential focuses on the knowledge and skills in
leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety are necessary to provide high quality
health care. The essential further emphasizes leadership skills are needed to ensure ethical
and critical decision making, initiating and maintaining effective working relationships,
care coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies. (AACN, 2008, p. 14) The
baccalaureate student will demonstrate mastery of this Essential when one is able to utilize their
leadership and communication skills to work productively within interprofessional teams in various
healthcare settings. For this paper, I will discuss how my Creative Implementation of Leadership
I chose to present my Creative Implementation of Leadership Project because I felt that the
completion of my project highlighted the fundamental skills outlined in the Essential II. Within my
project, I identified and described my personality and leadership characteristics which are utilized in
my everyday position as a charge nurse in the ICU. Throughout my presentation, I discussed how I
utilized the transformational leadership style to guide management of staff members and to ensure our
leader and methods use to implement safety and quality initiatives. The Essentials stated that

baccalaureate level nurses will employ principles of quality improvement, healthcare policy, and cost
effectiveness to assist in the development and initiation of effective plans for the microsystem and/or
systemwide practice improvements that will improve the quality of healthcare delivery. (AACN,
2008, p. 25) Within my presentation, I demonstrated mastery of this aspect by discussing the hospital's
utilization of quality improvement measures to guide practice and how the Joint Commission provides
standards that we adhere to. I also discussed my strategy as a leader on return of investment plan such
employee retention through promotion, higher pay, and recognition, budgeting strategies that increase
unit productivity and employee pay and satisfaction. My presentation also discussed my knowledge of
disaster preparedness-I described the hospital's utilization of the Hospital Incident Command System
and the expectation of ICU nurses and their roles and communication levels that must be acquired in
Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety. My presentation has shared my ability to
utilize my leadership skills as a charge nurse to connect with staff members and communicate effective
within interprofessional teams to provide quality patient care and improve patient outcomes. My
leaderships skills as evident throughout the presentation focused on safety initiatives and performance
