Dear Dr. Bruce,

My goal for this class was to improve as a writer. Ill be honest. Ive learned the

hard way that online courses are not the best learning environment for myself, and I did

not think that this class would challenge me as much as it has. It was not an easy A, but

my writing has improved immensely throughout this semester. Through the detailed

lesson plans, the informative readings, and the straightforward Student Learning

Outcomes (SLOs) that you provided, I was able to grow as a writer. I have included a few

pieces of my work in my portfolio that exemplify my mastery of the six SLOs of our

course this semester.

The first assignment that I chose to add to my portfolio is my annotated

bibliography. Through this assignment I was able to master Student Learning Objectives

1, 2, 3, 4. For example, I incorporated Rhetorical Focus (SLO 1) into my annotated bib.

by writing formally and addressing a variety of audiences. I wrote, This article explores

the history of both language protection and language restriction in the U.S., and looks at

the countrys future of language politics. This formal sentence describes the article

without stating an opinion or showing any bias towards one side of language battle. My

comprehension of ethical research (SLO 2) can be displayed when I wrote, Farr,


Samuel. In Opposition to Making English the Official Language of the U.S.

Government. Modern Language Journal, vol. 81, no. 3, 1997, p. 438. This MLA

citation shows that I can research and cite information from credible sources that deal

with language restriction. The introduction to annotated bibliography demonstrates my

understanding of SLOs 3 and 4. For example, I address the issue of the language

discrimination in the U.S. and through that I am able to persuade readers (SLO 3) to

come to the same conclusion that I have. My concise thesis, at the end of my

bibliography, displays how I have learned to focus and effectively address a rhetorical

situation (SLO 4).

The other piece that I have included in my portfolio is a peer review that I wrote

for a fellow student. This peer review document allows me to demonstrate my

comprehension of Student Learning Outcomes 5 and 6. Through this assignment I was

able to recognize and evaluate the language and design of the students paper (SLO 5)

provide feedback to collaborate with the student (SLO 6) to revise their editorial during

the drafting process. For example, I have both praised and critiqued my fellow

classmates draft, as well as provide ways to elevate the papers message.

Throughout this semester I have demonstrated the six Student Learning Outcomes

that you have laid out for this course. It is through this semesters assignments that I have

been able to learn and grow as a writer. I now have a much greater understanding of how

to write effectively and concisely for a variety of purposes.
