partly transparent.
Learning Students will be able to:
Objectives 1) Describe the changes to the thickness of paint after adding water.
2) Recognize that paint that has been watered down is slightly transparent.

Introduction Today we are going to find out what happens when we add water to paint.
(2 min) - What do you think will happen if we add water to paint?
Disappearing Disappearing Teddy Bears -
Teddy Bears - Teacher Actions (centers)
(15 min oHand out worksheets and have students write their name and the abbreviated
rotations) date.
oExplain that we are going to write a sentence about what we think will happen
if we add water to brown paint? Sentence I think... the paint will become
thinner.
oThe students must write their sentence before we start painting.
oHave set out a cup for each student with the same amount of brown paint.
oExplain to the students that we are going to paint the first the first bear, so we
can compare each bear after we add water each time. The first bear doesnt
have water and then the next has one drop the next has two drops etc.
oOnce the first bear is covered ask if the paint covers the teddy bear? Yes, it
does.
oTo add water, we are going to use a pipet and a container of water and only
add a drop with each new bear we paint. We use our paint brushes to mix up
the water and the paint.
oHave students observe the differences among the six painted teddy bears.
- Transition Details
o When students are done painting, they will go to the sink and wash and dry
their paint brush and put their paper on the counter to dry.

Ask the students what happen when we add water to paint and have them fill in
the bottom sentence. Adding water to paint makes it thinner and slightly
transparent
Review concepts:
Closure
- Adding water to paint makes it thinner and slightly transparent (we can see the
(3 min)
bear picture better) The more water added, the thinner the paint
- A thin layer of paint is transparent
- A thick layer is opaque
- We can dilute a thicker paint by adding water

At the beginning of each rotation, I should had started with a review of

Reflection yesterday and what transparent and what opaque means. I reviewed it before we
made our last observation about what happens when we add water to paint but it
would be useful to review it twice. I asked each student what they thought was
going to happen if we added water and I wrote it down on the mini-whiteboards.
This was very useful because the students can not independently write their own
sentences. The students all saw the desired result and realized that adding water
to paint makes it transparent.
