"Axion, Re-Worked Develop aromatic Furniture from Waste Plastic and Coffee." Additives

for

Polymers. 2010.6 (2010): 4. Print.

Axion, Re-worked develop aromatic furniture from waste plastic and coffee is about

exactly what the title says, turning recycled materials, including coffee, into furniture. The article

is very brief but gives you a good understanding of the outcome of the product. They describe

why they chose to use the coffee grounds and the effects it has on the furniture. This product

comes from a company in the UK and they intend to extend further into the recycled furniture

industry.

The biggest thing that I have learned from this source was that coffee grinds can be very

versatile. Who knew that you could use coffee grinds for more than just making coffee. This

article is relevant to my project because it is almost exactly what my project is on. The only

difference with this article is that they used organic materials which I would have never thought

of. When you think about it though, old, or already used organic materials being used for

something else is still recycling. So in this case I have definitely learned that you need to asses

every piece of material before discarding it and labeling it as unusable again.

This source has much credibility in it even with being so brief. The website itself is credible and

even the book it comes from. The author of this article is not recognized but there are two

credible names mentioned. Adam Fairweather, who is the director and came up with the main

idea of using coffee, and Steve Bell, who is the senior product development supervisor at Axion

Polymers. Axion is actually a company that is dedicated to creating things out of waste so that

nothing goes to waste . Other materials that Axion has been collecting to reuse have been vinyl

flooring, PVC, carpet, and even select medical devices that have all been thrown out.

Designing with Recycled Materials. New York, N.Y: Films Media Group, 2011. Internet

resource.

Designing with Recycled Materials is a twenty-seven minute video that is very

educational on the process of recycling the materials and turning them into a product. The main

material that they recycle in this video is playstation casings and refrigerators. They go through

the brief explanation of all the companies it takes to put one product together and all the moving

parts to make one product. When creating the chair, they were able to make it out of all separate

parts so if something breaks, they only have to replace the one part instead of the whole thing.

They go in depth about figuring out all the different plastics and metals are in the recycled

materials and how they sort through them. Testing the plastics after they have been melted

together for strength and adding certain harmless chemicals to the materials are also part of the

process. And the best part is since everything is cheaper and all the waste is reduced due to

recycling almost everything, like they say, the carbon footprint is much lower.

From watching Designing with Recycled Materials, I have learned many things. This video

has showed and explained to me the very long, but rewarding process of turning old trash into
something brand new and useful. It taught me about the various testing and sorting of the

different materials needed to be done in order to create a product. The one cool thing that I

definitely learned was that Europe made a law called The Waste Electrical and Electronic

Directive (WEEE), which was to make sure that any electronic thrown away needs to be

recycled as much as it can. So almost no part is wasted or left in a landfill pretty much. The

video explained that when it comes to using recycled materials, you need to be open to a new

way of thinking and designing because its not like using brand new materials. This is related to

my inquiry project because it has shown and provided me with information on how to create

furniture and such out of recycled materials. Which is exactly what my inquiry project is about

and exactly what this video is about.

Credibility for this source is provided throughout the video. They mention companies,

law's, requirements, and people. And all of these are real and the products they are making and

recycling the materials from are real. The process they have to go through and the requirements

they have to meet are what any other new products have to go through. They even suggest a

designing video for this type of thing that I will have to check out.

Dangelico, Rosa M, Pierpaolo Pontrandolfo, and Devashish Pujari. "Developing Sustainable

New Products in the Textile and Upholstered Furniture Industries: Role of External

Integrative Capabilities." Journal of Product Innovation Management. 30.4 (2013):

642-658. Print.

Developing Sustainable New Products in the Textile and Upholstered Furniture

Industries: Role of External Integrative Capabilities is an article about exactly what the title

says. Three people wrote this article, and their names are Rosa Maria Dangelico,Pierpaolo
Pontrandolfo, and Devashish Pujari . This article has many different sections and is pretty

lengthy. Its main focus is on companies trying to go green and the struggles and transformations

needed for this to happen. Going through the processes it takes and all the challenges faced to

make more earth friendly products. Development, capabilities, know-hows, benefits, methods,

data, research, and even visuals are provided and gone over throughout this article.

This article has showed and taught me a little about the technical and business side of

things when it comes to this industry. Some of it was a little hard because they use the technical

terms but it is introducing me to the serious side of this type of business. It doesnt seem directly

related to my inquiry project but the fact is that if you want to create things, in this world you

have to know all the sides of the business, not just the easy stuff.

The Journal of Product Innovation Management is where this article came from. This is

a peer-reviewed journal that explores and provides information on areas involving product

innovation. The authors of this article, Rosa Maria Dangelico,Pierpaolo Pontrandolfo, and

Devashish Pujari, are researchers who want to see a change in the world of sustainability. They

are very credible sources from foreign universities outside of the U.S.

Gaggino, Rosana. "Water-resistant Panels Made from Recycled Plastics and Resin."

Construction and Building Materials. 35 (2012): 468-482. Print. Ch. 3-4.

"Water-resistant Panels Made from Recycled Plastics and Resin" is about solving the

problems with building materials to help build houses and to help clean up the environment. The

materials that are used to make these panels include recycled plastic material from food,

perfumery or cleaning packaging, and then constituent materials are LDPE (low density

polyethylene), BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It goes
on then explaining how these materials are grinded together, sprayed with resin, put into a mold,

compressed together, and then finally the finished panel is ready. After the panels have been

made, they are then cut into different sizes to then be tested for the durability so that they can be

used out in the real world.

This source has provided me with another way to create supplies to then create furniture

and even walls if needed. Which is exactly what my inquiry project is all about. This article

explained the whole process of how it took the unwanted materials and made a panel out of

them. Simple and fantastic. Exactly the kind of thing my inquiry project is needing and looking

for. What this article has taught me and what I am starting to see recurring in many of the

recycled creation articles is that almost any material can be crushed up and mended together to

create something solid.

The easiest way to explain the credibility of this source is that they show evidence right

there in the article. There are many many pictures in this article showing you step by step some

of the processes that go into the making of the panels. And not only are there pictures but they

also provide many charts with numerous amounts of data. The author of this article is Rosana

Gaggino, who is much of an expertise in the area of industrial design and more.

Strategies Analysis Through Life Cycle Assessment: a Case Study in a Furniture

Industry."

Journal of Cleaner Production. 96 (2015): 308-318. Print. Ch. 1.

"Sustainable Strategies Analysis Through Life Cycle Assessment: a Case Study in a

Furniture Industry." is about trying to analyze the lifecycle of products and sustainable strategies
to build things out of medium density particleboard . A Lot of this article focuses on Brazil and

how much of their forests were planted to go into production of the different types of constructed

wood. This article even touches on the topic of global warming and the negative effects humans

are putting on the environment. It it trying to open your eyes to the damaging effects we have on

this planet.

Like I said in one of the other sources, this article is showing me a little more of the

business part of things. Maybe not as much as the other source but it comes pretty close. The

difference with this article to that one is this one gives you a little more of an understanding

viewpoint. It wants you to see all of the negative effects we have on the earth and how we can fix

it by recycling. It doesnt distract or scare you with necessarily all the technical terms. This

article has shown me how we actually use and somewhat manipulate our forests for the outcome

of products that will eventually be thrown away down the road in time. With my inquiry project,

I want you to see that but without shoving it in your face. I want you to see that building

something out of recycled materials does not always have an ugly looking end result and will

help the earth in the long run.

This article also has many data charts and diagrams on display throughout the text. There

are five different authors for this article who are all at the So Carlos School of Engineering.

Their names are D.R. Iritani, D.A.L. Silva, Y.M.B.Saavedra, P.F.F. Grael, and A.R. Ometto. All

are in the Department of Production Engineering except Y.M.B.Saavedra, who is in the

Environmental Engineering Sciences. They each have authored many more documents that

they are recognized for and expresses the credibility of this article.
