CHAPTER 14: TEACHING INTELLECTUAL SKILLS

OBJECTIVE
Development of Proposed Instructional Solution
1. Intellectual skill problem requires various instructional solutions, except
a. Increasing the variety of manipulative experiences which challenge students to
classify object within the classroom
b. Directly training students to classify objects on one and two dimensions
c. Setting up a cooperative support systems to help students acquire classification
skills
d. Identifying meaningful objects to be classified within the classroom
e. Making classification judgement that go beyond contained in instruction
Evaluation of the Instruction Solution
2. In evaluating the acquisition of an intellectual skills, teacher should consider skills
that can be used in a variety of contexts because it is important to
a. To demonstrate knowledge by using skills
b. To indicate whether the students has acquire a target skill
c. To develop instruction and to match evaluation toll to the context
d. To increase the variety of manipulative experiences
e. To help students maintain high level of motivation
ESSAY
3. Learning Problem (Intellectual Skill): The objective of lesson is to know how to
use the scientific method which involves the development of procedural knowledge.
However, students are never given the opportunities to use the scientific method in
dealing with problem. The techniques used by teacher are instructional device for
teaching declarative knowledge about the scientific methods but the students are never
shown how to use that knowledge.
In development of proposed instructional solution, how might teacher develop his/her
instruction and how will teacher evaluate the instructional solution?

ANSWER
1. E
2. C
3. In development instruction, teacher can use real-life illustrations of the scientific
method to maintain students interest, teacher should use illustrations that relevant to
students lives to increase their motivation in learning. Then, teacher need to include
illustrations of scientific problem solving in which the scientific method has not been
applied appropriately and the consequences of the inappropriate application. Finally,
teacher should to create activity which allow students to apply the scientific method
to solve a problem. While for evaluation, teacher should evaluate the students ability
to use scientific method by giving them a series of problem and asking them to apply
the method to solve these problems. Teacher can require the students to clearly
identify each step in their answer so that teacher can evaluate their ability to use of
scientific method steps.
