Reading Option 7/8/9

Year Plan

Mckenzie Matthews
September-December 2017

Subject: Reading 7/8/9

Year Plan Mckenzie Matthews

Semester: September-December 2017

Teacher: Mckenzie Matthews

Overview:
This class provides an opportunity for students to simply sit down and read. Students today have absurdly busy
school schedules and lives in general, therefore allotting time for students to just stop and read offers an
occasion to focus on the simple, but essential, skill of reading. I plan to keep this as a mostly silent reading
environment however, I will have different lessons on reading strategies, different types of readers, reading
materials and strategies on finding desired reading materials. I aspire to create readers out of all the students
enrolled in this class, however since that is likely unrealistic, I aim to simply create an appreciation and value of
reading in all students. Throughout this course, I will encourage students to complete their own Book reviews
and reading logs as a method of gauging their reading while simultaneously allowing students to create their
own opinions and curate their interests. The overall goal of this class is to create a space where students can
come into the classroom and read and discuss their reading in a safe environment.

**This class is a multi-grade course where the grade 9 students will be in class every day but the grade 7s and
8s will be in class on alternating days. Therefore, the layout of this year plan and subsequent unit plans are very
rough as the logistics of the class have not yet been settled.

Expectations:
I expect that students will enter the classroom, promptly, with a willingness to learn and an open mind about the
content and the ways in which it will be approached. I expect that students will complete assignments within the
given timeline and have the work completed to the best of their ability. I expect that students will respect
themselves, their peers and classroom materials and resources. I expect that students will come to class on time
and be prepared with the proper materials to learn for the day. I expect students will complete work honorably
and truthfully with no plagiarism or cheating of any kind.

Skills and Attitudes:

Students will ultimately develop their reading skills in this course as they are introduced to new strategies and
are given time to implement these in their own reading. Students will learn to choose books that best suit their
interests and reading abilities to be able to adequately engage in their reading. Students will learn about genres
of books and develop their own opinions about different types of literature. Students will be given opportunities
to read materials other than books and become aware of how immersed they are in a literary world where
people rely on their reading skills. Students will develop an appreciation of the artistry of writing through
experiencing many materials available in our world today.

Assessment Strategy:
Reading Logs 15%
