have been taken to prevent such accumulation of fumes from it as are
likely to be injurious to the workers employed in the room. A personal accident is defined as an unexpected happening that
interrupts the normal work activity of an employee, and usually, though not
necessarily, results in an injury or exposure to risk in his immediate
surroundings. An equipment accident is an unexpected happening to an
equipment that could result in injuries to the employees.
Accidents are complex. Usually there are several causes, both man-
made and environmental, that may operate, in sequence or in
combination, to result in an accident.
Accidents are caused. They seldom just happen. To prevent an
accident from happening, its causes must be determined and eliminated. The
supervisor must understand as to why men act unsafely, and how unsafe
conditions are produced, and thus be able to recognise and correct the
situations before they lead to an accident. One major method of learning it
is from a thorough accident investigation.
