6th Grade
6.3 The student will investigate and understand the role of
solar energy in driving most natural processes within the
atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and on Earths surface. Key
concepts include
a) Earths energy budget;
b) the role of radiation and convection in the distribution
of energy;
c) the motion of the atmosphere and the oceans;
d) cloud formation; and
e) The role of thermal energy in weather-related
phenomena including thunderstorms and hurricanes.
For this activity, students will research the solar energy and
understand the concepts, then students will get into groups of
two and discuss what they have learned, document it, organize
their information. After preparing their documents they will
begin to design a project to present to the class. Students may
use computers to research their information such as google or
chrome. They can use paper, pencils, crayons, colored pencils,
construction paper or any materials of their choice but no
sharp or glass objects.
Using the internet students will create a project on paper or
card board with their information they have gathered. They
will be able to watch slide shows and demonstrations on how
solar energy works and be able to understand visually instead
of reading the information from a textbook.
