LINES OF NAZCA

The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs of enormous dimensions that are found in the Nazca desert, Ica,
in the present Republic of Peru. These "Geoglyph" Lines
were created by the Nazca people between the 3rd and
8th centuries BC. These geoglyphs in Nazca represent
hundreds of figures, including stylized images of
animals such as monkeys, hummingbirds, lizards, etc.
traced in the plain of the desert, these lines are
constituted in extensive roads delineated by stones in
their surroundings.

The area of the Peruvian desert in which the Nazca

Lines were elaborated is called the Pampa Colorada
(Red Plain). It is 15 miles wide and runs about 37 miles
parallel to the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. The desert
is not sand, but it is made of dark stones on its red
surface and the ground is a lighter color below. The
lines were created by clearing the darker upper layer
of the soil and revealing the lighter subsoil.
