Through informal conversations, I have identified that there are several staff members who
would be interested in participating in professional development opportunities that will help
increase their knowledge about using various tech tools (e.g. Google Classroom, Google Apps
for Education, formative response tools, etc.) for effectively within their classroom. This will
enable teachers to move beyond the Substitution level of the SAMR (Substitution,
Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) Model in order to better facilitate and support
meaningful student learning through the incorporation of technology; in other words, it will aid
in going beyond using Chromebooks as a word processing and basic research tool.
In order for my internship to be effective and useful, I will be considering several of Elys
Conditions of Change, which outlines eight different conditions that must be met in order for the
successful implementation and adoption of a technological innovation. First, I will be focusing
on the dissatisfaction with the status quo, making sure that my professional development
opportunities will be tailored to fit the needs of the staff (pre- and post-surveys will be given in
order to assess the needs). I will bring my knowledge and skills to ensure that it gets sufficiently
passed on to the staff who participate in these opportunities. I will also be ensuring that all
participants will have a voice within this process so that the professional development
experiences will be relevant and applicable to their needs, regardless of where they are in their
comfort and level of technology integration. I am hoping that I will also have your continued
support and commitment, in addition to other leaders within the school, to help encourage and
motivate participants through this process with me.
For my internship, I am planning on providing a few different types professional development
opportunities and resources for the staff at our school. The rationale behind this is to ensure that
there are multiple ways for our staff to engage in these learning opportunities, especially taking
into consideration their level of need and also their availability of time. The opportunities are as
follows:
1. Google Drive - A shared folder will be set up for all staff to access and contribute to
containing all relevant reference documents, videos, tutorials, samples lessons, etc.
2. (Roughly) Monthly Face-To-Face Sessions - Each session will focus on one tech tool that
is identified as a need based off surveys that will be sent out to the staff prior to each
session.
3. Follow-up/Additional Sessions - These will be made available upon request for
individual/small groups of teachers who express a need for additional support for a tech
tool we have covered in a monthly face-to-face session.
Throughout this entire process, I will be engaging in quite a bit of reflection using the survey
results participants will be responding to at the end of each face-to-face session, as well as the
follow-up surveys. These survey results will help me to measure the effectiveness of each
professional development opportunity I provide, as well as inform me of how I should proceed
(e.g. continue with originally planned PD or modify). The results will finally also provide
insights on how much the newly introduced technology tools are being used within the
classroom, whether or not teachers are finding them useful, and how teachers are using them
(e.g. Are they going beyond the Substitution level in SAMR?).
I hope that you will agree to support me in my implementation of my internship and the
professional development opportunities it entails. My goal is to better equip teachers with
knowledge of technology integration and increase their comfort level with using various
technology tools within their classrooms in order to increase meaningful student learning.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Chen
