Spanish 1

1. Who is your CT? Where did he/she go to college, study abroad? What does he/she like best
about language teaching?
2. How (for what purposes) does your CT use Spanish in the classroom?*
a. Profe uses Spanish during the activities with the students, but usually repeats herself
in English afterwards. She uses Spanish during vocabulary activities, and answers
some student questions in Spanish. She also praises students in Spanish.
3. How (for what purposes) does your CT use English in the classroom?*
a. She uses English to explain the activities and homework assignments. She also uses
English for classroom management.
4. How does your CT decide how much target language to use? Ask if you dont know.*
a. In Spanish 1, Profe uses about 50% English and 50% Spanish. In Spanish 4, she says
she uses close to 90% Spanish and 10% English.
5. How does your CT build positive relationships with students during class?
a. She uses positive feedback, and consistency. She likes to find out what students are
interested in, and talk to them about it. She gives positive compliments to students
(about their clothing, hair, grades, etc.), so that they feel comfortable in her class.
She treats students equally so that her classroom is a fair place where no student
feels like they are treated poorly.
6. How does your CT help students build positive relationships with each other during class?
a. Profe told me it is hard to have the students build positive relationships during class,
that are outside of their regular friend group. The students have poor social skills,
especially when they actually speak in Spanish, so they usually dont want to speak it
in front of kids that they dont know. Profe uses many partner activities to try to get
students up, moving, and speaking Spanish with different students.
7. How does your teacher use body language for classroom management or relationship
building?
a. Profe uses proximity for classroom management, by moving around the classroom,
to monitor that students are staying on task during their partner activities and
independent work time. She is open with the students, so that they feel
comfortable talking to her.
8. What kind of voice does the teacher use?
a. She uses a teacher voice-firm when needed, loud so that even the students in the
back can hear her, and kind so that students know they can approach her and
negotiate meaning with her on the content.
