Banks in India:

Commercial Banks refer to both scheduled and non-scheduled commercial banks which are
regulated under Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

(a) Scheduled Commercial Banks

1. Public Sector Banks

a) State Bank of India and its Associates


b) Nationalised Banks

2. Foreign Banks

3. Regional Rural Banks

4. Other Scheduled Commercial Banks.

(b) Non-Scheduled Commercial Banks (Private Sector Banks)

Public Sector Banks = 27 [(State Bank of India + Five Associates + BMB = 7) +


Nationalised Banks = 19 + IDBI ]

Private Sector Banks = 21

Foreign Banks = 45

Regional Rural Banks = 56

Urban cooperative banks = 1589

Rural Cooperative Credit Institutions = 93,550

So theoretically there are 95,288 Scheduled and non-scheduled commercial banks

But in more refined terms they are = 93 (Private Sector Banks + Public Sector Banks +
Foreign Banks )
