Introduction:

Vector, a quantity that contains both magnitude and

direction, is one of the basic knowledge to physics. It is
because many contents in physics requires a basic knowledge
of Forces and Velocity, which also counts as Vector. Vector is
the part where physics and math are related in terms of
content taught, but it gives us a good idea of how things in
real life really work out theoretically.

Vector in this chapter has to do with

something we re already learning about which
is Newton s Law of motion. The rst law
introduces us about the Net force. This could
be applied by Vector in terms of adding and
subtracting vector, but in this case we re
adding and subtracting forces applied on an
object. The second law introduces us about
the acceleration, which could also be
represented by a vector also. The third law
introduces us the action-reaction pair of
forces. It is the concept where both vector of
forces should interact in a dierent direction
but the same magnitude.
This experiment is about forces, specially the action-
reaction forces. The task of the experiment is to nd an
equilibrant from applying a certain amount of force and
direction on a rope to balances the ring in the middle of the
table from being pulled by other forces applied on the ring.
The experiment sounds hard but we are sure that
performing this experiment will worth us a lot of
understanding to the chapter of Newton s Third law
Objective:

To use dierent ways to nd out Resultant and Equilibrant

To test the method and compare to the result from the

experiment

To get more understanding on concept of forces especially

action-reaction forces

To prove that the Action-Reaction forces are really equal

by using many methods

To be able to apply this concept in real life.

Materials:

Force Table

Central Ring

Pulleys

Hanging Masses
Setup:

Procedure:

1. Prepare all of the materials needed

2. Balances the Force table.
3. Set the pulley of 1 to 100g in the direction of 30N of E
and Set 2 to 100g with the direction at 45N of W. Set
the ring into the central of the force table
4. Tries to balance the ring randomly, in both magnitude and
direction to nd the 3 .
5. Record the data on the sheet given.

6. Repeat step 3 with one more pulley (this will be 3) of

100g mass and 25S of W in direction.
7. Tries to balance the ring randomly, in both magnitude
and direction to nd the 4 .
8. Record the data on the sheet given.
9. Using the method to calculate to nd 3 and 4
10.Compare the data that we get from the experiment to the
calculation by using the method
Data and Result / Conclusion:

Analysis and Result:

From the experiment, we could conclude that:

Both the direction and the magnitude of the force
aect the Equilibrant and Resultant. If you change the
direction of the force, then the direction of the Equilibrant
and Resultant will change as well.

For both of the table, we see that all

forces have the same magnitude but
dierent direction because we need to
balance the ring in the center of the
Force table and also has the same
parameter of the ring. When we did this
experiment, we should control and
measure the direction and also the
weight correctly because both of these
really aect the result of the
experiment.
Both results from the experiments only have a little
of dierence from the result from Graphical method, but
that s might be because of human mistakes. The rst
resultant, the result of the magnitude from the experiment
is only less than the result from the calculation about 1.75
g, but the result of the direction are the same. For the
second resultant, the result of the magnitude from the
experiment is more than the result from the calculation
about 11.65 g which is quite a lot dierences, but that s
because of human mistakes and in the denition of the
experiment and direction is a bit dierent about 1.39.

Conclusion:
In this experiment, we did two things. The First one is
doing the calculation by using graphical method which
focuses on the components X and Y to nd the result which
included the magnitude and direction. The Graphical Method
can be divided into two sub-methods: the Parallelogram
Method and the Polygon Method. The Second one is doing
the experiment by randomly nd the correct angle with the
right magnitude by using the force table as the main
material.
After this experiment, we are able to nd the resultant
correctly by calculation with the methods or do an
experiment and we also get more understanding on
concept of forces to adapt to the real life.
Recommendation:

In this experiment, we applied a little too much force on

the force table by setting up the pulleys which made the force
table bend a little bit to the side. Next time we would be more
careful on using the equipment that requires extreme precision
to make sure we won t get accurate data in the end.

Work Log:

Date: October 20, 2017

Goal: Create a new online document and discuss.
Journal: We created a new online document as planned and listed every
topic we need to write about. We assigned works to members to make
the work become faster.

Date: October 21, 2017

Goal: Copy down the table of data into the document
Journal: We helped making the table in the document. Cartoon created
the table, Pat lled in the data, Nut and Khing changed the color of the
table so that it looks good.

Date: October 30, 2017

Goal: Write some of the information of each topic
Journal: We helped and discussed about writing each topic. We didn t
struggle about writing anything since we used the last report as a
references. In the end, we nished writing most of the information.

Date: October 31, 2017

Goal: Write the rest of the information
Journal: We worked the night at the rest of the report. Everything is
done and we, surprisingly, also nished design and decorating the
report within one night. We planned to print out the report tomorrow in
the morning.

Date: November 1, 2017

Goal: Print out the report and Turn in to Ms.Susan
Journal: We print the report out in the study hall class. When we turn in
the report to Ms.Susan, we found out that we missed something in the
report, so we x them right away. We planned to print out the missing
information tomorrow then turn it in on November 3.
