Company: Sunnyside School District (Human Resources Department)

Human Resources Manager: Julia Whitley

Human Resources Assistant: Zelenna Vasquez

Data Entry Specialist: Eliana Falls

Introduction

Healthy living is important. A balanced diet along with the right exercise regimen can

help us reach and maintain a healthy weight. By participating in a healthy lifestyle, we can also

help reduce our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and cholesterol; while

promoting overall good health (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2017). This is

crucial when working at a job placement that is very sedentary by nature. Our department

understands that in order to instill a culture of wellness, we must first educate the employees on

what healthy living looks like. This means learning the basic components of healthy living

(eating well, staying active, and leading a positive and happy life). This will be done in the form

of digital workshops, informational materials, and social media platforms dedicated just for this

purpose. Below is a breakdown of how we hope to delegate our healthy eating and fitness plans.

Healthy Eating

We want to combat diet deficiencies and illnesses linked to poor nutrition, with simple

steps to improve our daily intake of needs for our body. Along with the health benefits of eating

well, employers can also expect more productive and happier workers. When employees eat a

healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks, productivity soars (Kohll, 2017). Below is our healthy food

menu that will be provided in the office with collaborative help from all the employees, while

keeping in mind any potential food allergies:

Fruit plates: Bananas, apple slices, strawberries, grapes, watermelon, etc.

Veggie trays: Celery, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, etc.

Protein options: Yogurt, cheese, deli meats, tofu, etc.

Drinks: Water, coconut water, green tea.

Healthy dessert options for office celebrations: All-fruit cakes, paleo cupcakes, protein

balls, etc.

Working in a small office makes providing these things easily because there are not so

many employees to provide for. Sweeping changes tend to fall flat after a short time; incremental

changes are easier to accomplish and sustain (Overbeck, 2015). It is through our example that the

trend catches on to the outside offices and becomes normal during our holiday events, potlucks,

and professional development lunches as well. Each employee will be assigned a snack to bring.

We change the order at the first of the month to keep the fluidity and bring diversity in our

snacks.

Human Resources Manager: Fruit plate and drinks.

Human Resources Assistant: Drinks and desserts. Modified to accommodate food

allergies.

Data Entry Specialist: Protein items, veggie tray/snacks.

Active Time and Fitness

In addition, each employee member will spend a total of 20 minutes away from their desk

to perform an exercise to help combat the constant sitting. There will be a break schedule posted

in the office, and the front desk clerk will be available to remind employees of their breaks.

For fitness activity options, the data entry specialist is utilizing her experience as a former

group fitness instructor, to come up with a thirty-minute high intensity workout session that can

be done after work. We will follow the NSCA guidelines for basic resistance training by

scheduling training 4 days a week, while engaging all the different major muscle groups

throughout each week (Housh, Housh, & DeVries, 2016). Modifications will be made for those

needed. There will also be a booklet made available to all employees with exercise ideas that can

be completed at home. The idea is for the group to keep each other accountable.

Conclusion

We believe that a healthy lifestyle begins with the self. If we hope to see and work in a

healthier environment, then we need to start with ourselves. The nutritional choices will support

the team, and bring awareness to the current diet and how we can create better daily habits

through small changes. One of those being to exchange a frappuccino with a coffee with a

serving of cream, that can be provided by the office building.

By combining a healthy nutritious diet and encouragement for a more active style, it will

bring many positive changes in the wellness of the staff. Keeping in mind the level of fitness and

current health condition of each employee, we believe that with the right support and

implementation strategies; each employee will gain endurance, shed weight, and have a healthier

mental state. It is our hope that this model for wellness will bring about much needed changes

that are lacking in the current work environment, and spread from the office out into the

community.
