Q&A

1. What are Post Installed Anchors and Cast in Bolts?

Ans-
Post Installed Anchors

This type of an anchor is installed in a hole that is drilled in hardened concrete. There
are two main types of post-installed anchors Mechanical Expansion Anchors (MEA)
and Bonded Anchors. Once the concrete has been poured and set, youll have to use
post-installed anchors. (Once again, the name says it all.) This type of an anchor is
installed in a hole that is drilled in hardened and cured concrete. Post-installed anchors
are proprietary products manufactured by several companies.

Cast in Bolts

The cast-in-place anchors are non-proprietary and are the simplest type of anchor bolts.
As the name implies, these anchors are cast in the wet concrete before it sets. Most
designs consist of a standard bolt with a hexagonal head (hex head bolt), though there
are other designs such as hooked J bolts and L bolts. Cast-in-pace anchors are very
strong, and can be used in most anchor applications; but they are also difficult to cast.
Cast-in-place anchors are recommended when the loads require large embedment
lengths and high tensile strength.

2. What does Hilti sell Cast in Bolts or Post Installed Anchors?

Ans - Hilti sell both Cast in Bolts and Post Installed Anchors
Eg. Kwick Cast KCS-WF and HCI MD (Cast in)
Screw Anchor and Flush Anchor (Post Installed)

3. Which codes are used in India for design of Anchors and Rebars
Ans- The codes used in India For design are :
ETAG based (Anchors)
Eurocode based (Rebars)
4. What factors should be considered while selecting the type of Anchor to be
used?
Ans The factors are which anchor type is the fastest and easiest to install for a
particular application. But for situations where load transfer is important, professional
evaluation of the proposed application is necessary. In addition to static and
Dynamic load forces, other factors to consider include safety and environmental
concerns, the material in which the anchor is attached, dimensional considerations, and
how the anchor must perform over time.

5. Which Anchor will you use in low strength concrete, mechanical or adhesive and
why?

Ans- In low strength concrete Adhesive anchors will be used because

1. The shear force is spread equally along the length of the rod
2. The advantage of the adhesive anchors is that they always work
3. The adhesive anchor works by drilling a hole in the concrete, filling it
with adhesive and then inserting the rod.
4. The most important advantages of chemical anchors over mechanical
plugs and dowels are high break resistance due to elasticity and
adaptation to uneven drill holes.
5. Ideally suited for high load applications, in virtually all cases the
resulting bond is stronger than the base material itself and as the
system is based on chemical adhesion, no load stress is imparted to
the base material as with expansion type anchors and are therefore
ideal for close to edge fixing, reduced center and group anchoring and
use in concrete of unknown quality or low compressive strength

6. Which Anchor of Hilti will you provide to use in Nuclear Power plants?

Ans - Heavy-duty anchor HSL-3 M24/30

7. Which Anchors are suitable for Architectural Applications

Ans- Mechanical Anchors and Adhesive Anchors both are suitable for
Architectural Applications. Adhesive Anchors are also suitable in cracked
concrete.

Eg- Hilti HVZ

8. Which Anchors are suitable for Earthquake Loads
Ans Mechanical Anchors are suitable for Earthquake Loads based on seismic
load capacity.

Eg Hilti X-HSN24 and X-ENP-19 and Hilti undercut HAD AND HSL -3

9. What are cast in channels where are they used.

Ans Cast in Channels enable fast-track construction and cost savings through a
simple and quick installation. Cast in Channels offer the ideal solution for easy-to-install,
adjustable connections. Cast in Channels can be used to create any construction
connections: faade, precast construction, residential construction, traffic engineering
(e.g. tunnels), lift construction, and infrastructure such as bridges or crane runway
connections.

Features:-
Hot-rolled profiles ideal for dynamic loads
High corrosion resistant steel offered
Custom and standard solutions
Superior performance in cracked and non-cracked concrete

Benefits: -
Adjustable connection
No damage to the load-bearing reinforcement
Reduces total construction time
Cost saving
Maximum efficiency when mounting in rows
Torque wrench is the only tool required for installation
No welding required
User-friendly installation: no noise; no dust; no vibrations
10. What is the difference between Rebar and Anchor
Ans Rebar
Rebar (short for reinforcing bar) is collectively known as reinforcing steel and
reinforcement steel, it is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in
reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and hold the
concrete in tension. Rebar's surface is often patterned to form a better bond with the
concrete.
Any material with sufficient tensile strength could potentially be used to reinforce
concrete. The most common are steel, glass fiber, basalt fiber, and fibre-reinforced
plastic. Steel and concrete have similar coefficients of thermal expansion, so a concrete
structural member reinforced with steel will experience minimal stress as the
temperature changes

Anchor
An anchor is a fastener used to attach objects or structures to concrete. There are
many types of anchor bolts, consisting of designs that are mostly proprietary to the
manufacturing companies. All consist of a threaded end, to which a nut and washer can
be attached for the external load. Anchor bolts are extensively used on all types of
projects, from standard buildings to dams and nuclear power plants. They can also be
used to firmly affix embed plates to a concrete foundation when used with a structural
steel element
