Assure Lesson Plan
Grade:
9th grade
Lesson:
Math Operation Vocabulary
Goal:
Students will be able to identify math vocabulary and symbol in order to organize it under its
corresponding math operation.
Analyze Learners:
The class is a total of 16 students between the ages of 14-15. There are seven boys in the
classroom and nine girls. Ten of the students are Hispanic. Six of the students are African
American. This is all of the students first year taking algebra. Most of my students are visual
learners and kinesthetic learners with a few auditory learners.
State Objectives:
111.39. Algebra I, Adopted 2012 (One Credit)
(1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and
demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:
(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace;
(B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information,
formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and
evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;
(C) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology
as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as
appropriate, to solve problems;
(D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple
representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate;
(E) create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical
ideas;
(F) analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas;
and
(G) display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise
mathematical language in written or oral communication.

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify which words and symbols fall under adding.
Students will be able to identify which words and symbols fall under subtraction.
Students will be able to identify which words and symbols fall under multiplication.
Students will be able to identify which words and symbols fall under division.
Students will be able to effectively implement the correct operation to later on create a
numeric equation for the word problem.
Students will be able to find key terms that will help them identify the operations that
need to be used when solving a math problem.
Select Media, Materials and Methods:
PowerPoint
Construction paper
Word Bank Worksheet
Highlighters
Direct Instruction
Academic Vocabulary
Collaborative learning
Utilize Media, Materials and Methods:
The PowerPoint will contain the warm up and important information for today. Once warm up
time is done, we will discuss our warm up then I will correlate the warm up with todays lesson.
Once I have done that I will inform them of what we are learning today but more specifically this
whole week. After Warm Ups are collected, I will divide the class into four groups of fours. I
will pass out word bank worksheets and construction paper. The students and I will play a small
game that I created in PowerPoint in order to get a understanding of how to do the worksheet.
Then they will start working together while I walk around in order to answer any questions that
they might have.
Require Learner Participation:
Students will need to collaborate with their group because they will get a grade for completing
the project as well as a grade for participating. There will also be a homework pass for the group
that finishes first with all correct answers.
Evaluate and Revise:
As students are doing group activity I will evaluate how much they contribute to the project. I
will also evaluate whether this activity was well conducted with groups. Did the students rush
too fast through the assignment? Did all of the students participate in their groups? I can do this
activity by making students do the activity alone.
