The Class

1. How many females and males are in the class?

a. Female students-8, Male students-16.
2. What is the age range of your students?
a. I believe that the students are all either freshmen or sophomores, so ages 14-16.
3. What are their names? (Try to learn as many as you can. Please politely request a
seating chart or class list so you can begin learning names as you observe/work with
students.)
a. N/A

The Room
4. What works well about the room organization? What would you change if money were
no object?
a. The room is organized with desks in pods of three, with rolling chairs. Its nice
that the students can work together in their pods, but there is little space for
moving around the classroom, as there are many pods, and students move
around a lot with the rolling chairs.
b. If money were no object, I would buy chairs that were more stationary, but still
were not just regular desk chairs. Crates, or exercise balls on little legs or
platforms, or even some higher up seating that would clear up some space in the
classroom would be nice.
5. How does the room reflect Hispanic cultures (or in non-Spanish classes a learning
culture or culture of discovery)?
a. There is Spanish cultures in the room as Profe has a Spanish flag, and a scarf
from the soccer team Bara. I also believe she has some things up from Mexico.
6. What language/learning tools are provided in the room to help the students learn
and/or use Spanish? (permanent and temporary)
a. Prof has many posters and pictures on her wall that help students with learning
the Spanish language. She has the levels of proficiency up (Novice, Intermediate,
Advanced) so students can assess their level of the language. She also has signs
up around the room with what is currently being taught.

The Learning Environment

7. What is the feel of the classroom?

a. The feel of the classroom seemed hectic to me at first, as there was a lot of
chit-chatting going on as the class got started. Students were not pulling up their
hook activity and took a while to get into it. But once class got underway more
students were paying attention to what was being done for the day.

b. I think the feel of the classroom changed when the students realized that I was
another teacher in the classroom who was also going to be walking around to
help and keep students on task. This especially changed when they realized I
was actually going to tell them to get back on task and not just let it slide when
they were working on something different!

Behavior Management

8. What behavior management tools are found in the classroom?

a. During the hook activity, when the students were not paying attention, Prof
was standing and pointing very large at the board, where the activity was
displayed. She then walked around to make sure students were pulling up the
activity, and monitoring their progress on her own computer. During class, she
was would walk around to make sure students were engaged.
b. Personally, I used some non-verbal techniques to redirect students. I would tap
on their desks, and because they not be used to someone redirecting them like
that, I had to whisper to them what I wanted, or point at the board. I also
continually monitored the students by moving throughout the classroom.
9. What levels of talking and movement seem to be accepted in the class? Do they vary on
the activity / time of class?
a. The students collaborate a lot in class, so talking and movement are definitely
accepted during this. BUT it seems that the students talk a lot during regular
instruction time, and move around freely during this time as well. I personally
found the constant movement of the rolling chairs to be very distracting, and I
wasnt even learning for the day. I also found the side conversations
happening in English to be very distracting.
b. The students are definitely allowed to talk more during collaborate activities,
such as the vocabulary review game that was played, and the homework
assignment that was reviewed together.

10. Additional Comments and thoughts important to you

a. Prof has many pictures and letters from old students up on a board in the back
of the classroom. I think this is really cool, it shows that she connects with
students well.
