Lesson Reflection 1

The objectives for my lesson were that the students would learn about the culture of

Barcelona from a former habitant of the city, and that the students would be able to analyze

the differences and similarities between their own culture and that of the city being studied. To

teach my lesson, I started with a review with the students about a previous lesson they had on

Barcelona. I had prepared a presentation on PowerPoint of pictures, videos, and questions to

get the students as involved as possible. While I was giving the presentation, the students filled

out a guided notes worksheet, and at the end of the lesson for an informal assessment, the

students made cultural comparisons. I felt very prepared, as I lived there, and know a lot about

the culture.

My cooperating teacher made a note to me that I paced the lesson really well, which I

also felt that I did well. The only part of my lesson that I didnt get to was a class review of the

answers to the questions on the guided notes, but this wasnt in my original lesson plan (my

cooperating teacher added this in). We didnt get to it because it was a shortened schedule,

and my teacher also had a small review to do with her students.

I felt that I was successful in engaging the students as much as I could, given that it was

a lecture style lesson. I taught the lesson twice, and the first class (the one I did not video tape)

actually was much more interactive and the students were asking me a lot of questions during

the lesson about my own experiences, and answering the questions I asked them. The second

class (the one I video taped) is much quieter and so they were not nearly as interactive. I tried

to ask them a lot of leading questions, where they could easily come up with the answers, but

they did not want to talk.

I feel that I can improve in two areas specifically. First of all, I didnt deal with any

classroom management issues during my lesson. There were only two issues, and they were

very small, but I didnt do anything other than look towards those students with a teacher

look. If I hadnt been confined to one area of the classroom (due to having to video tape, and

not having that many students actually turn in their video permission forms), then I would have

walked over by those students while teaching, but I wasnt sure of what else to do or what to

say, so this is something for me to watch for in my cooperating teacher and try out. The other

way I know I need to improve is by using the target language. I struggled with that during this

lesson because my cooperating teacher actually asked me to change things that were on my

slides in Spanish back to English, and to speak in English more than Spanish, but there were

probably small ways I could have used the language more. I really want to have a classroom

with 90% Spanish and only 10% English, but this will definitely take time and practice and a

class willing to try it out.

One part of my teaching persona that I think I presented well was my teacher voice.

My cooperating teacher actually mentioned to me that I projected my voice well, and spoke

clearly and not too fast or slow. This was good to hear, because I was naturally nervous being

up front, so it was nice to know that she noticed that. I think I need to improve my teacher

persona by moving around the classroom more. This was difficult for me to do in this lesson

because I was video taping and because I had to click on my PowerPoint, and there is no

clicker that I can use to walk around the classroom and still keep my slides going. I definitely

want to move around the classroom more, and will work on ways I can do this.

In the future, I want to have more interactive lessons that involve the use of the

language. While this may not be possible in the classroom I am in as much right now, I will be

keeping ways I can do this in mind with every lesson I teach, even if I cannot practice them right

now. I really want to find ways for even level one students to be using the language in class

because I know how important the use of the language is. I also want to have an interactive

classroom, because I had this in my high school Spanish classrooms (and college), and think it

just makes learning the language so much more fun.
