Lesson Idea Name: Simple Machines
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S4P3. c. Ask questions to identify and ex plain the uses of simple machines (lever, pulley, wedge,
inclined plane, wheel and axle, and screw) and how forces are changed when simple machines are
used to complete tasks.

Technology Standard Addressed:
1. Empowered student: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Lesson idea implementation: Teacher will play the created movie at the beginning of class as an opening to
simple machines. After watching the brief video of simple machines, teacher will group students so that each
machine can be represented and then have the groups pick one of the simple machines that they saw in the
video. The teacher will tell the students that they will need to research their chosen simple machine, finding
information on what it does, how it works to use less force to do work, and examples.

Once students gather all this information, they will create a presentation using one of the following to present
their findings to the class: PowerPoint, Prezi, posters, butcher paper, or anything else approved by teacher.
After the presentations, teacher will review all of the simple machines together.

Importance of technology: Using a multimedia authoring is critical because it allows for students to visually
see things as they are being introduced, making them concrete things instead of abstract. This lesson could be
done without the tool, but the visualization of the machines would be lost without the video to play. Along the
video, students will be using productivity tools to help them present the information that they have found in
their research.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: There is small concern for student privacy in making a movie for students
to watch, but the concern can grow if the teacher asks students to make their own movies to be posted on the
classroom blog or school website. A student work usage form needs to be signed before a students work can
be posted or used by others. If student pictures are being used in the making of the movie, then another
permission form needs to be signed by the parents before that can happen.
