Functional Intervention Occupational Therapy Kit Description

Occupation/ Impairment Decreased problem solving and meal prep, specifically baking.
that Kit Addresses This kit can also be used to increase supination/pronation.

Itemized list of contents in - Kitchen measuring tools (1 cup, cup, 1/3 cup, cup,
kit 1 tbs, 1 tsp, tsp, tsp)
- Four small plastic cubes with Velcro meant for
measurement label attachment
- Four small cylindrical Tupperware containers
organized by bead color
- Beads within cylindrical Tupperware containers (pink,
blue, green, yellow)
- Measurement labels with Velcro on the backs making
them interchangeable on the plastic squares

Instructions for use of kit 1. Remove contents from the box

2. Therapist chooses which labels to place on the plastic
square cubes (place labels on with Velcro)
3. Depending on grade, therapist or patient opens
Tupperware containers holding colored beads
4. Therapist asks patient to fill each square with labeled
amount
5. Depending on grade, therapist can request patient to
measure out only one color, or simulate a recipe by
mixing colors (mix tsp of green beads and tsp of
pink beads)
6. If time permits, have patient put beads back in
designated color Tupperware containers using
impaired hand, demonstrating fine motor control
Examples of intervention 1. Measuring out 1 tsp blue beads, cup yellow beads, tsp
activities pink beads, and 1 tbs green beads to demonstrate improved
supination by pouring the measurements into their labeled
cubes.

2. Demonstrate increased grip strength and stability by

opening each Tupperware container holding beads prior to
performing measurements.

3. Exercise dynamic sitting balance by placing plastic cubs with

labeled measurements farther distances from the patient,
demonstrating improved dynamic sitting balance and trunk
flexion when pouring measurements into cubes.

4. To demonstrate increased problem solving, utilize a recipe

of beads (i.e. ask the patient to fill a cube with tbs of beads
but to fulfill this measurement with two different colors,
prompting patient to mix one color and of another color)

How kit can be graded for The most simplistic way to utilize this kit involves the
low and high level patients therapist choosing four measurement amounts and placing
them on the plastic cubes along with opening the cylindrical
Tupperware containers with beads and asking the patient to
measure and fill each cube with the designated amount of
beads asked of them from each label.

The middle ground in grade involves the above steps but

asking the patient to open the Tupperware containers holding
the beads, demonstrating hand strength.

To grade this kit to the highest level a recipe approach can be

taken, for example: Fill this cube with tbs of beads and use
two different colors to do so (prompting the patient to fill the
cube with pink beads and yellow beads). This highest
level can be applicable to a myriad of impairments including
complex problem solving, decreased supination/pronation,
and hand strength.
