Reader Summary

Reader: Yulani
Grade: 3rd
Tutor: Alyssa Corcoran
Date: 9/20/17

Quantitative Summary:
In the first meeting, the tutor distributed reading assessments to determine the readers text level
at three stages: independent, instructional, and frustration. The independent level was 20 and the
student scored 95% accuracy, a 1:8 self-correction rate, and 64 words correct per minute.
The instructional level was 21 and the student scored 94% accuracy, a 1:15 self-correction rate,
and 72 words correct per minute.
The frustration level was 22 and the student scored 93% accuracy, a 1:16 self-correction rate,
and 68 words correct per minute. Yulani scored below the 50th percentile (71) for fall 3rd grade
on both the independent and frustration level texts. She scored above the 50th percentile on the
instructional level texts.

Qualitative Summary:
At the instructional level, Yulani had many substitutions such as come for came, or tried for tied.
These substitutions did not maintain the meaning of the text but were visually similar to what
was on the page, and the syntactic structure was not always maintained with these substitutions.
Yulani made an effort to decode unknown words. When making an error, Yulani would
sometimes repeat the sentence to try and self-correct or she used visual cues with her self-
corrections but she rarely made self-corrections.
The level of fluency for Yulani is a 2.4 out of 4 for the integration score on the Pinnell and
Fountas Scale for Assessing Fluency. She does not pause for natural breaks or to reflect the
punctuation and her phrasing is unnatural. Her intonation and stress do not reflect the meaning of
the text unless there is dialogue in the reading.
Yulanis retelling was at a frustration level. She was able to identify main ideas in the text but
struggled retelling specific details because her attention was placed on decoding unknown words
rather than reading for comprehension. However, she could answer most of the literal and
inferential comprehension questions. Overall, Yulani had a high level of accuracy but the
comprehension was not satisfactory.

Reader Summary:
Yulani was motivated to read any text I gave her. I observed her trying to decode words but she
did not get frustrated and stayed motivated. Yulanis vocabulary and background seemed to be
lacking due to the fact that she is an English language learner. Yulani enjoys reading and does
not let any reading challenge make her frustrated. She is a joyful girl who likes reading anything,
especially Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Goal/s for the reader:

The primary goal for Yulani is to work on fluency. She needs to work on her pausing and
intonation while reading. She could also work on decoding and looking through the whole word
while trying to figure out an unknown word. Yulani also needs to improve her vocabulary and
knowing tenses while reading. I hope to help Yulani build these skills and expose her to rich
vocabulary.
