Recognize some major rock forming

minerals such as quartz, feldspar, calcite,
and mica.
Recognize ore minerals including pyrite,
magnetite, hematite, galena, graphite, and
sulfur.

Smart Geology app will assist the student with

identification of minerals. This app contains
pictograms of each mineral to identify,
classifications of minerals, characteristics of the
mineral, formation process, and an approximate
time-scale of the mineral.

The class can use either specimens brought into the

classroom by the teacher and work in groups to
identify the minerals. The specimens can be in kits
given to each team of students or placed around the
room for the students to go to and move from
station to station. If time and weather permit, the
class can occur in an outdoor area to find specimens
in the ground and see how deposition of the
minerals occur. The teacher will provide oversight
and clarification on the students questions as they
work on each of the mineral samples and provide
safety if in an outdoor location.

Use of the app will allow the students to have a

study guide saved to the mobile device and not have
to take notes, unless they choose too. The students
can also take photos and videos of the specimens to
show what they have found.
