Determinacy
Statically Determinate: all internal forces can be identified
by Equilibrium equations.
Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson, & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 1.1-1.6 1
Determinacy
n: number of parts
r: number of force and moment reactions

TRUSSES
Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson, & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 1.1-1.6 7
Stability
A structure will be geometrically unstable if there
are fewer reactive forces than equations of
equilibrium or if there are enough reactions,
instability will occur if the lines of action of the
reactive forces intersect at a common point or
are parallel to one another.
r< 3n unstable
r>=3n unstable if member reactions are concurrent
or parallel or some of the components form a
collapsible mechanism
Example
Clasify according to stability.

Simple Truss
Compound Truss
Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson, & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 1.1-1.6 11
Complex Truss
b + r<2j unstable
b + r>=2j unstable if truss support reactions are
concurrent or parallel or if some of the
components of the truss form a collapsible
mechanism
b number of bars
r number of external support reactions
j number of joints
Statics:The Next Generation (2nd Ed.) Mehta, Danielson, & Berg Lecture Notes for Sections 1.1-1.6 12
External Stability
Internal Stability
For internal stability, each joint must be held fixed so that it can not move in a
rigid body sense with respect to the other joints.
